Siųa
Siųa
So I figured I should open a thread here about my conlang, whose extensive description I relentless work on day and night.
But it's never enough!
Siųa is a conlang set in a pre-columbian Quebec, with possible origins west of the Ural Mountains.
Here is a sample text to give you a hint of what it feels like.
And here is an intro to the whole language family, with historical background and all that nice stuff.
And here is an unfinished (as everything else) phonology, with a lot of stuff missing.
I don't have any sound samples right now because I can't seem to find the perfect prosody for the language. Also I'm not an old leathery moose hunter, yet.
Do tell me what you think.

Re: Siųa
It reminds me of Finnic languages, is it related to Finno-Ugric?
I like the supplication, it is very native pre-columbian in scope.

Wait, what? Egein, is there any reason you've created a new account?

It seems pretty much the same?MONOBA wrote:Ah!
This IS egein but I am tired of egein.
Egein is dead, long live MONOBA.
Also this siwa is way more kick ass than before.

I can't find any traces of Egein anywhere on here. Either he changed his username or he got deleted or something.

I'm not. If it's egein, egein is acting strangely.
EDIT: well, apparently it is egein, or at least someone with access to egein's account.

So. You're high? You've had some kind of transformative mental breakdown?

Why? It's not as if you've told us why we should care. What's changed since the last time you made a thread about the same language?MONOBA wrote:No, nothing like that. I'm not sure why this is such a big deal. I'd rather you make a big deal out of what I posted.

Re: Siųa
Holy crap.
Are you guys being serious?
What kind of ridiculous hostility is this?
The conlang gets better and better. However, I made some tiny changes in the phonology which had huge repercussions throughout the language.
I didn't remember ZBB being such a nice and friendly place.

You can't just give such a tiny piece of information, it's like giving a child a crumb instead of the whole cookie. Show what's different?MONOBA wrote:The conlang gets better and better. However, I made some tiny changes in the phonology which had huge repercussions throughout the language.

I'd say add some recommended translations.Astraios wrote:That was a pretty small cookie!
Maybe you could translate some of the things in that other thread into the new version. That would be a lot tastier.

This guy's post formatting looks a lot like Egein's, so yeah, I'd say it's him. Idiosyncratic posting styles are easy to forget over time, so they end up looking suspicious, I guess.
Why doesn't the nasal vowel reduce? Is that the sound that now has fewer restrictions?
As far as prosody goes, I'd say just listen to a lot of long sound samples in a language with the basic feel of what you want and butcher that into something that works. (I stole Serhes Kettw prosody from American movie imitations of Irish English, for example, but that's because I'm lazy.) Most natlang grammars that I've seen don't bother describing prosody anyway, or if they do, it's only a page or so, most of which is pitch diagrams. So you can pretty easily get away with that sort of thing.

Re: Siųa
The sound with less restriction is /ɣ/, allowed in two word initial clusters, <tsġ> [tsχ] and <sġ> [sχ] (cf. tsġỉn [tsχi:n] 'cedar'). The nasalized vowel simply does not have distinction between open, closed, short or long because it is always the result of -un-/-um- or -on-/-om- + C (so it is always short and closed).
