Culture voting - RESULTS Wed 3/5

Post by zompist »

All right, if I've done this right, here are links to all of the entrants for this round. I've purposely listed them in a different order (west to east), hopefully to reduce the effect of people voting for the first few cultures they read. :)

As usual, please rank up to 5 cultures. USE THE CULTURE NAMES PLEASE as some people submitted multiple cultures. (Hint: cut and paste.)

As noted in the culture thread, the expansion of cultures will be based on the votes received.

Wow, now I see a whole list of them, it looks bigger than I thought.

1. Lulweon
2. Zalar
3. Apʰɯron
4. Ngoor
5. Ggazzei

Doesn't this make you feel like a god, whimsically bestowing blessings on your "favoured"?
It was about time I changed this.

3. Č'irah
4. Ccuxu
5. Nggwoó

1. Cesɔn
2. Ccuxu
3. Nespek
4. mecongai
5. Nggwoó

Some thoughts about my votes:
Cesɔn has a good combination of being 'nearby' and well-written, and feels like it can support complexity easily: they'd be great to see all around Lyra.
Ccuxu is just kind of a neat concept: a frozen north where stone-age golems erect an alien landscape of walls.
Nespek is kind of a tactical vote for if my own culture doesn't survive: I like the golem-human hybrid society dynamic, and want to explore it in CCCP.
Mecongai is another solid golem submission, and is likely where my society's golems come from ancestrally. Also nice pictures :)
Nggwoó provide an interesting possibility: a sprawling northern dominion of Mongol bat-people. Flying Genghis? - gets my vote, haha.

So... Seven votes and the deadline is tomorrow. Maybe we should extend the deadline.

I'm going to try to vote soon, but I need to make sure I read the details for each culture to make sure I'm voting fairly, and this takes quite a bit of time, since most people have written fairly detailed descriptions.

Considering the turnout for the last round of voting, I'm pretty surprised. Extending the deadline might be sensible, considering the complexity of the entries.

Extending the deadline does seem sensible if more people want to vote.

What I did was read through each entry as they were published. The ones I liked I put on a short list. Later I could compare them and eliminate until I was left with five (if I needed to refresh my memory of a culture I'd skim through the entry again).
It was about time I changed this.

I do want to vote here but I am not going to be able to in the time that is left (I have to go to bed momentarily and then go to work) so I won't be able to vote until after the deadline has passed. I'm very close to being able to vote, but I just don't have enough time to read through the three or four remaining cultures in the list before I have to get on with my daily responsibilities. I'm guessing a number of other people are in a similar situation, because it takes a lot of time to go through all these cultures and make an informed decision. So I ask that the deadline be extended.

Huh. One more day and still not many votes. Do people know this thread is here?

It's been hovering near the top of the board this whole time, and it's in the stickied index thread; I think anyone who cares knows it's here. I think people are giving this one some thought; I wouldn't be surprised if we got a bunch of votes tomorrow, right before the deadline. I would definitely be opposed to moving the deadline again; a certain amount of adjustment is probably necessary to allow for the differences between rounds, but I think keeping deadlines is important to keep people engaged.

It is a hard group to vote over: I couldn't really single out anyone's work who was comparatively 'lacking' in any real degree, so selecting the 'winners' was more an exercise in personal taste. I had been reading the entries as they were published (a bit of non-trivial time each day), so I can understand folks who have to comb through it all at once taking a while. Wednesday is ending here in China, though, so hopefully there are more votes by the time I wake up, haha: democracy is as good as its voters! :P
