Re: Romanization challenge thread

Post by mèþru »

I wrote the post wrong: umlaut + back vowels is how I form front roundeds. (This is now fixed.) <ë ï ö ü> does not seem like a consistent usage of umlauts. Digraphs won't work because I want one Latin letter for each letter of my yet to be made conscript. Breves might work, but the thing is that breves are mainly used to indicate short or reduced vowels and the stroke/bar can be derived from reanalysing ɨ.

I use <y> for /y/ and <i> for /i/. If I used <ü>, it would be for /y/.

...I thought Turkish only has <ü>? (dotted/dotless I is not an umlaut)

Nope, it has ö and ü (as do other Turkic languages), and (from the Wikipedia page on Ï) "in scholarly writing on Turkic languages, ⟨ï⟩ is sometimes used to write the close back unrounded vowel /ɯ/, which in standard modern Turkish orthography is written as the dotless i ⟨ı⟩."

But we still have to remember about Turkish vowel harmony in backness: ieüö - ıauo and in roundeness: üöuo - ieıa, so it is still sophisticated whether to describe some vowels as umlauts or not. We probably would be right if we used <ï> instead of <ı> and <ë> instead of <a> or <ä> in place of <e>.

I personally am a fan of using back rounded vowels + tilde for back unrounded vowels.

In word-final position, non-glottalized nasals and /l/ are followed by -ë and glottalized nasals are written plain.
-i following <a> is written with a diaeresis to distinguish it from <ai> /e/.

I generally forget to say, so if it's relevant and I don't mention it--I'm from Southern Michigan and speak Inland North American English. Yes, I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift; no, I don't have the cot-caught merger; and it is called pop.

/f s (z) ʂ ɕ (h)/
/m n ɲ ŋ/
/w l r ʐ j/
/a e ə o i ɨ u/

/b/ only appears in loanwords. /z/ may or may not appear; I'm not sure whether to preserve it (in Middle Chinese loanwords and from lenition of /s/) or to merge it with /r/. If /z/ appears, [dz] is an allophone of /z/ after /n/; if not, it only appears in loanwords. [tʂ] only appears natively as a sequence of t + ʂ, but appears in loanwords. [dʐ] only appears natively as an allophone of /ʐ/ after /n/ and as a sequence of d + ʐ, but appears in loanwords. /ɨ/ has fricated allophones as is common in the region. The only consonants that can occur word-finally are -l -n -r.
