They don't. Syllable structure is mostly CVCV...C, and most of the exceptions are Cʔ, ʔC, or CʔC.

Also, I'm curious to see how much I can remember the orthography of my own lang, so here's my attempt at transcribing it... although I can remember most of at least the first two sentences.

Not as much lol as Zhuang.

(It did use that letter among other, Latin letters. Not as /ɥ/, – nor as /tʃ/ – but still.)

dear holy fucknuts that took forever to align properly...notepad(++) failed me bigtime. Anyways, yeah, I've been told that this is a diacritic clusterfuck, so maybe some ideas could be appreciated? vowels have to be able to take acutes and graves for loltone, which is why [ɐ] and [ɒ] both use underdiacritics.

Here's a new challenge, some new conlang I started to work on today:

Image

  • Maximum syllable structure is CCLVCCC (where "L" is a sonorant, i.e. the sonante row in the table).
  • Almost all diphthongs with /j, w/, rising or falling, are possible ([aw, øw, iw, uj, ju, uw...), with the exception of [ji, ij, jy, yj, yw]. So don't use <syV> or <sjV> for /ʃV/.
  • /ɥ/ only appears in the rising diphthongs [ɥa, ɥɑ, ɥo, ɥø].
  • Also note that stress is highly irrelevant in this language.

I'd prefer an orthography that somehow uses digraphs unambiguously, without using diacritics.

/m m̥ n n̥ ɲ ŋ/
/pʰ p b tʰ t d tʃʰ tʃ dʒ kʰ k g/
/f v sʰ s z ʃ ʒ x ɣ/
/w ɥ r l j ʎ/
/i y u e ø o ɛ a ɑ/
/ju je jø jo jɛ ja jɑ/
/wu we wø wo wɛ wa wɑ/
/uj ej øj oj ɛj aj ɑj/
/iw uw ew øw ow ɛw aw ɑw/
/ɥa ɥɑ ɥo ɥø/

Sample text to try out:

/dejn tʰo kraʃn breɲ lyme ʒgwaks | pʰɛ mlevnvi spʰetʰim ʎuwm̥itʃ sø | ʒa.its sʰalmni ʃeʃeŋks fjab lju ɲdʒadɥor lfjɛŋ || kors lymje ɣawdn taɲtʃ | xeɣni.a jo zbutsbu pɛwkø | mkʰɛj noj sɥa laʃa ŋiɣu n̥lendam mkown tʃʰa/

/m n ɲ ŋ/ <m n ny ng>
/pʰ p b tʰ t d tʃʰ tʃ dʒ kʰ k g/ <ph p b th t d tch tc dj kh k g>
/f v s z ʃ ʒ x ɣ/ <f v s z c j x gh>
/w ɥ r l j ʎ/ <w uh r l y ly>
/i y u e ø o ɛ a ɑ/ <i ue u ee oe o e a aa>

/dejn tʰo kraʃn breɲ lyme ʒgwaks | pʰɛ mlevnvi spʰetʰim ʎuwm̥itʃ sø | ʒa sʰalmni ʃeʃeŋks ɲdʒadɥor lfjɛŋ || kors lyme ɣawdn taɲtʃ | mkʰɛj noj sɥa laʃa ŋiɣu n̥lendam mkown tʃʰa/
Deeyn tho kracn breeny luemee jgwaks, phe mleevnvi spheethim lyuwmitc soe, ja shalmni ceeceenks nydjaduhor lfyeng. Kors luemee ghawdn tanytc, mkhey noy suha laca ngighu nleendam mkown tcha.

Or version 2 with vowel diacritics:
/i y u e ø o ɛ a ɑ/ <i ü u é ö o e a á>

Déyn tho kracn brény lümé jgwaks, phe mlévnvi sphéthim lyuwmitc sö, ja shalmni cécénks nydjaduhor lfyeng. Kors lümé ghawdn tanytc, mkhey noy suha laca ngighu nléndam mkown tcha.

I like this phonology - it reminds me of SE Asia for some reason.

Also, crap, I forgot to add the voiceless nasals /m̥/ and /n̥/ (which appear in the sample text otherwise). They are in the phonology I wrote on a flying piece of paper, though I forgot to copy them when passing the information to the computer. Anyway, they could easily be added to your orthography as <mh> and <nh>.

Your orthography is ambiguous as for syllable boundaries, <kue> could be either /ky/ or /ku.e/, and also between /lj/ and /ʎ/ and /ɲ/ and /nj/. /ɲ/ is my main problem in this language, since <ny>, <nj> and <nh> aren't available (being already used for /nj, ndʒ, n̥/). I admit I should've added such cases in the sample text.

I just added /m̥/ and /n̥/ to the description and some hiatuses in the sample text.

And yes, it's inspired by Thai, but things like [dn#] as in [ɣawdn] are inspired by English.

Actually, just as in English they don't assimilate across morphemes in compound nouns... So you get distinct /kʰan-go/ mushroom-cook -> /kʰango/ 'to cook', and /kʰaŋ-go/ to.dance-action (/-go/ is a derivational morpheme) -> /kʰaŋgo/ 'a dance'. Easy to solve though, /ɲdʒ, ŋg/ are simply <nhdj, ngg>.

Your orthography is still ambiguous as for whether <VV> is a single <V> or <VV>: <ao> could be /ɑ/ or /ao/...

EDIT: I think that I might just use diacritics for the vowels. I was thinking of writing /y ø ɛ ɑ/ as <uh oh eh ah> inspired by Rekettye's use of <uh> for /ɥ/, but then that's incompatible with Nortaneous' ingenious use of <h> in /m m̥ n n̥ ɲ ŋ/ <m hm n hn nh ng>, since <ohn> could be either /on̥/ or /øn/.

I could consider writing /y ø ɛ ɑ/ by using <q> as a modifier: <iq/uq oq eq aq>. But I find this ugly.

So, inspired by your guys' ideas, I'm basically going with this:

/m m̥ n n̥ ɲ ŋ/ <m hm n hn nh ng>
/pʰ p b tʰ t d tʃʰ tʃ dʒ kʰ k g/ <ph p b th t d tch tc dj kh k g>
/f v sʰ s z ʃ ʒ x ɣ/ <f v sh s z c j x gh>
/w ɥ r l j ʎ/ <w yw r l y lh>
/i y u e ø o ɛ a ɑ/ <i ü e ö o ë a ä>
/ju je jø jo jɛ ja jɑ/ <yu ye yö yo yë ya ä>
/wu we wø wo wɛ wa wɑ/ <wu we wö wo wë wa wä>
/uj ej øj oj ɛj aj ɑj/ <uy ey öy oy ëy ay äy>
/iw uw ew øw ow ɛw aw ɑw/ <iw uw ew öw ow ëw aw äw>
/ɥa ɥɑ ɥo ɥø/ <ywa ywä ywo ywö>

(I'm choosing /a ɑ/ <a ä> because /ɑ/ is far less common than /a/, so it's just for the principle of least effort in typing.)

Nice! Then there's basically no ambiguity for hiatuses. O:

/fee/ fee
/feɛ/ feeh
/fɛe/ fehe
/fɛɛ/ feheh

/faa/ faa
/faɑ/ faah
/fɑa/ faha
/fɑɑ/ fahah

Except for <oe> which can be /u/ or /oɛC%, oe%/. E.g. <xoen> /xun, xoɛn/, <lboe> /lbu, lboe/.

...Though your orthography still has the same /ɲ/ vs. /nj/ issue (both being written <nj>).

Better idea, since you have to have <ngg> anyway, but you could just use hyphens.

I thought I had something in there saying use <h> to separate vowels in hiatus, but apparently not. /ɑ/ <ao>, /ao/ <aho>.

Also <yw> looks much weirder than <wy> to me for some reason but that's just aesthetics.

Or middle dots or apostrophes... I like middle·dots.

That works nicely too. I see you wrote /xeɣni.a/ <Xeghnia> though, so the <h> only gets inserted if the hiatus is /eo/, /ea/ or /ao/?

<yw> is used in Chinese linguistics for /ɥ/ (also <jw>), while I'm not used to any language that uses <wy> for it.

Could do it either way. I think I just forgot about it.

There's a wy ligature somewhere in Unicode. And it could be English interference: w can never be a vowel, but y can be, so CywV looks like two syllables and CwyV looks like one.

Actually, I think I'll use it always, both to make the presence of a hiatus very obvious and clear, and because stuff like /fɑa/ <faoa> and /fɛɛ/ <feaea> looks a little too weird for me (even when the language doesn't allow /aoa/ and /eaea/ to happen).
Nortaneous wrote:

It's actually a <vy> ligature. I'd like to use it as long as it doesn't look too much like <vy>, but unfortunately it's in the mediæval range, which means that no font I like has it.

Another reason for using <h>: <feao> is ambiguous between /feɑ/ and /fɛo/, not to mention liu for /li.u/ and /ly/.

So here's my final romanization:

/m m̥ n n̥ ɲ ŋ/ <m hm n hn nh ng>
/pʰ p b tʰ t d tʃʰ tʃ dʒ kʰ k g/ <ph p b th t d tch tc dj kh k g>
/f v sʰ s z ʃ ʒ x ɣ/ <f v sh s z c j x gh>
/w ɥ r l j ʎ/ <w yw r l y lh>
/i y u e ø o ɛ a ɑ/ <i iu u e oe o ea a ao>
/ju je jø jo jɛ ja jɑ/ <yu ye yoe yo yea ya yao>
/wu we wø wo wɛ wa wɑ/ <wu we woe wo wea wa wao>
/uj ej øj oj ɛj aj ɑj/ <uy ey oey oy eay ay aoy>
/iw uw ew øw ow ɛw aw ɑw/ <iw uw ew oew ow eaw aw aow>
/ɥa ɥɑ ɥo ɥø/ <ywa ywao ywo ywoe>
<h> is inserted between two vowels in hiatus
/ɲ ŋ/ are written <n> and not <nh, ng> before a palatal and a velar respectively
/n/ before a palatal or velar is written <n·> (this only happens at morpheme boundaries in compounds)
