Not to me. I mentioned Crsi because I thought that was the word for "boy", but now I see I got mistaken, since it's really Wurf, which doesn't sound puke-ish to me.Lyhoko Leaci wrote:And how about [wuɻf]? It's closer to cursi than any other word I know IMO. XD

Well it's closer to a dog's bark, but it's not hard to imagine at all: labialness is common in onomatopoeias for things coming out of the mouth: air (burp, belch, blah); the rhotic adds the vibrating factor and the frication indicates continuity.Chagen wrote:I fail to see how <Wurf> sounds like puking.

Yes, the significant/signification correspondence in the linguistic symbol is largely arbitrary and conventional. Wait, there was one exception...Chagen wrote: and onomatopoeia varies between cultures/langs (The Pazmat onomatopoeia for puking is Xrx anyway).

I like Crsi meaning "girl", maybe because it reminds me of Greek κορίτσι [ko'ri.tsi] meaning the same thing.
Wurf sounds kinda odd to me, but I think it's better than the man-diminutive.
P.S.(whispering): The fact a natural language does it, does not make it any less odd/weird/strange/peculiar/bizarre/queer, ya know!

Shame on you for assuming I'm not familiar with the peculiarities of lesser Romance languages!Izambri wrote:You can start exterminating all natural languages* that have features and traits as "weird" as those above.L'alphabētarium wrote:I know I don't even get a vote on that, but... please don't use ['faʒɔ] or ['faʒæ] to pronounce fage. Then we'll talk about conlangs.

... only that it does. Why is X weird? Because it is uncommon in some way. So Occitan doing it doesn't make <a> [o] typical, but it certainly makes it less weird for a conlang to do it. Weird orthographies are more ok if A Natlang Did It.L'alphabētarium wrote:P.S.(whispering): The fact a natural language does it, does not make it any less odd/weird/strange/peculiar/bizarre/queer, ya know!

What I was saying is that figures of speech for suggestion may include grammatical imperatives and orders. E.g.:
A: You've been all day long in your room. Come walk the dog with me!
B: Yea, well sorry, it's just that I have to hand in some papers tomorrow.
A: Oh, I see. Well, no problem, see you for dinner.
The part in italics is, surpisingly, a suggestion.

Re: The Lexicon Building Counselling Service
Which makes me think about the Hellesan word for "dog": cai (masc. sg.) and cade (fem. sg.), from Peran kadi "dog", a nice example of palatalization of a root's consonant that forces its loss in the masculine but not in the femenine.Ean wrote:No, the dog is! Cynical even!
Strangely I ended up with a similar thing for "cat", but with labialization: mau (masc. sg.) and maure (fem. sg.), from Old Hellesan maur, from Peran mauru "cat", from Sate masuru "cat".

Ah, no, I wasn't asking for advice. But if you want me placing an order, please, gimme a root or word for the very concept of "colony", and I'll adopt or adapt it (in)to Hellesan.Ean wrote:Izzy that's just showing off, you already have the words ;P! The OED says:
I think I'll go the Greek way... I like the "from home", as if the word was made by people from the colonies and not the others.colony (n.)
late 14c., "ancient Roman settlement outside Italy," from L. colonia "settled land, farm, landed estate," from colonus "husbandman, tenant farmer, settler in new land," from colere "to inhabit, cultivate, frequent, practice, tend, guard, respect," from PIE root *kwel- "move around" (source of L. -cola "inhabitant;" see cycle (n.)). Also used by the Romans to translate Gk. apoikia "people from home." Modern application dates from 1540s.

I worked it... and don't like the result. The word sounds almost like *Narnia* XDEan wrote:So what would that be in Hellean?
Time to try again. I'll keep the etymology, "people from home", but I'll need to do a roundabout way.

I tried to work that apoikia thing in Silladen and got this:
Edhuif /e.ðui̯v/
or Edhuim /e.ðui̯m/
and directly home-people:
Dovent /do.vent/ (older Doveghent)
but that would mean more like "compatriot"
