Ommo Phonology & Phonotactics

Substantial postings about constructed languages and constructed worlds in general. Good place to mention your own or evaluate someone else's. Put quick questions in C&C Quickies instead.

Ommo Phonology & Phonotactics

Phonology

Consonants
Nasals: /m n/ <m n>
Plosives: /p b t d k ʡ/ <p b t d k q>
Affricates: /ts tʃ/ <c ć>
Fricatives: /f s ʃ x ʜ/ <f s ś x h>
Laterals: /l ɬ/ <l ł>
Approximants: /j w/ <y w>
Trills: /r/ <r>

Some notes in regards to specific pronunciation and allophony:
  • /w/ has some coarticulated friction at the labial position perhaps a better rendering of this phoneme would be /wᵝ/
  • The presence of epiglottal consonants arose from diachronic processes of uvulars merging (maybe labialized uvulars and regular uvulars merged and gave rise to the epiglottal plosive and fricative and lost labialization in the process).
  • /r/ can be realized as [r] or [r̥] depending on the phonological surroundings. Between two vowels /r/ remains voiced, juxtaposed to a voiceless consonant the /r/ devoices to [r̥].
  • The presence of epiglottal consonants typically "laxes" the following vowels and in many cases the vowels are harsh/strident voiced. (Work on some more formalized rules for this)
Vowels & n-phthongs
Monophthongs
Non-Rhotic Oral Vowels: /i e æ ə u o ɑ/ <i e ä ə u o a>
Rhotic Oral Vowels: /ɛ˞ ə˞ ɐ˞ ~a˞ ɔ˞ / <er ər ar or>
Non-Rhotic Nasal Vowels: /ɛ̃ æ̃ ə̃ ɔ̃ ɑ̃/ <ę ą̈ ə̨ ǫ ą>
Rhotic Nasal Vowels: /ə̃˞ ɐ̃˞ ~ã˞ / <ə̨r ąr>

Diphthongs
Non-Rhotic Oral Diphthongs:
  • Closing: /æɪ̯ ei1 æʊ̯ ɑɪ̯ ɑu̯1 ou̯/
  • Height-Harmonic: /æɑ̯ eo̯1/
  • Opening: /iə̯ ia̯ uə̯ ua̯/2
  • Centering: /eə̯ oə̯/
Rhotic Oral Diphthongs:
  • Height-Harmonic: /ɛɔ̯˞ /
  • Opening: /iə̯˞ ia̯˞ uə̯˞ ua̯˞ /2
  • Centering: /eə̯˞ oə̯˞/3
Non-Rhotic Nasal Diphthongs:
  • Height-Harmonic: /æ̃ɑ̃ ɛ̃ɔ̃4/
  • Opening: /jɛ̃ jæ̃ jə̃ jɔ̃ jɑ̃ wɛ̃ wæ̃ wə̃/5
Rhotic Nasal Diphthongs:
  • Opening: /jə̃˞ jɐ̃˞ ~jã˞ /5

    • 1.These diphthongs are uncommon and/or restricted to loan words.
      2. Some dialectal variation exists where the realization of opening diphthongs exists as an onset of /j/ in lieu of /i/.
      3. Dialectal variation of /eə̯˞/ & /oə̯˞/ ranges from the aforementioned phonological realization to /ɛə̯˞/ & /ɔə̯˞/ especially in dialects where mid-vowels are developing a phonemic split between mid-open and mid-close. (Must flesh this out more)
      4. /ɛ̃ɔ̃/ only occurs in one word /minɛ̃ɔ̃/ "carnage"
      5. In opening diphthongs where the nucleus shifted from the first vowel to the second the initial /i/ categorically shifted to a realization of /j/.

Triphthongs
Non Rhotic Oral Triphthongs
  • Initial Segment as Nucleus: /aʊ̯ə̯ aɪ̯ə̯ ei̯ə̯ ɔɪ̯ə̯ iʊ̯ə̯ iə̯u̯ ie̯a̯ uə̯i̯/
  • Secondary Segment as Nucleus: /i̯ai̯ i̯ao̯ u̯ai̯ u̯ei̯ u̯iə̯/
  • Tertiary Segment as Nucleus: N/A
Rhotic Oral Triphthongs

  • Tertiary Segment as Nucleus: N/A
Non-Rhotic Nasal Triphthongs
  • Initial Segment as Nucleus: N/A

Phonotactics, Allophony & Ephemera
The basic syllable restriction is that of (C)(C)VTriphthong(C)

The onset syllable clusters allow for a number of combinations namely:
m+/n l j w/
n+/m s r l j w/
p+/f s ʃ x l ɬ r l j w/
t+/s ʃ x l ɬ r l j w/
k+/s ʃ x l ɬ r l j w/
ʡ+/∅/
b+/r l j w/
d+/r l j w/
ts+/r l j w/
tʃ+/r l j w/
f+/m n p t k s ʃ x l ɬ j w r/
s+/m n p t k ts tʃ f x l ɬ j w r/
ʃ+/m n p t k ts tʃ f x l ɬ j w r/
x+/m n p t k f s ʃ l ɬ j w r/
ʜ+/∅/
l+/∅/
ɬ+/∅/
j+/∅/
w+/∅/
r+/∅/

Any consonant can occur in the coda position.

Notably intervocalically all consonants can geminate. However the most common consonants are nasals, fricatives and the voiceless plosives.

I'll put up the orthography and do some more grammar stuff to post soon.
