I'm somewhat surprised that the system of your conpeople lumps together all kinds of unrelated animals under "bears", but goes to very fine distinctions between species under "bats".

It could indicate a special reverence, a general familiarity...

You could say the same about "worms" vs "cats". The "very fine distinctions" really aren't as fine as they look - Free-Tailed is a family containing around 100 species IIRC, and there are more single species in the cats category (six, vs only one in the bat category). Another thing to bear in mind is that, in-world, this isn't a system created by a specific culture, or even by humans. I'd be doing things very differently if this was a conscript for, say, bronze age humans living in a flood-plain agricultural society.

That's my general conworlding philosophy. Paired with "Is there a good reason why I shouldn't?"

Conworlds that do have Gods coming before humans can get away with a lot of shit. Meanwhile, my conworld can get away with a lot of shit because all the implausible stuff - like Gods or Dragons - is really figments of imagination come alive (I stole that idea from Warhammer, where Orks can use their latent psychic power, albeit unconsciously, to bend reality to suit them. And I even have the Minovsky Physics to back it up!)

Bats remain controversial, so I have moved onto other superheroes (and assorted arthropoda). It was really hard to get good reference images for some of these, they probably all have the wrong number/type of legs, eyes, or mouthparts. And between this and the insects, I never want to see the word pedipalp again.

Image

xr̀t - Arachnids*

sjv́rp - Solifuge (Kinesis)

xvj̀rp - Lobster (Metamorphosis)
(Clawed) Lobsters, crayfish etc.

xvv̄jp - Centipede (Crisis)

Centipedes, symphylans, pauropods, remipedes and similar. Attributed to Crisis as predators.

xvŕjp - Mantis Shrimp (Anthesis)
Attributed to Anthesis for colour and sight.

xrr̀vt - Triops (Genesis)
Horseshoe crabs and tadpole shrimp. Attributed to Genesis as primitive.

xrj̄vt - Mite (Nemesis)
Mites, ticks, lice, aphids, bedbugs, and generally all small, simple arthropods. Attributed to Nemesis as parasitic.

xrv́t - Spider (Synthesis)
Attributed to Nemesis as building.

xj̄t - Scorpion (Telesis)

Scorpions, pseudoscorpions and whip scorpions.

xv́jt - Crab (Analysis)
Attributed to Analysis as scavenging.

hvr̀jt - Whip Spider (Ascesis)
Attributed to Ascesis as solitary.

hvr̄vk - Shrimp (Physis)

Shrimp/prawn, krill etc., various small long-bodied aquatic crustaceans lacking prominent claws. Attributed to Physis for social behaviour.

hvj́vk - Harvestman (Noesis)

Harvestmen and Sea Spiders.

hrv̀rk - Woodlouse (Gnosis)
Woodlouse and other isopods.

hrj̄rk - Millpede (Stasis)
Attributed to Stasis as slow moving.

*Yet another not-very-accurate name, from the point of view of modern, Earth-based taxonomy, but I prefer it to "Arthropods", which feels too broad, or "Spiders", which feels too specific.

I keep going back and forth on the bat issue, between the 2nd and 3rd design (I want my upside-down bats, dammit). The third, with the head upright, may look less natural but would be easier to draw (ever tried drawing a face, in profile, upside-down?).... for humans, and so my reasoning goes around again.

This marks the halfway point for the 14x14 animal grid, 98 animals in total.

The Centipede and Millipede look a little forced (if that makes sense) but the rest are spot-on.

Bump, because I can't remember the C&C Quickies pruning rules.

2 week inactivity, I believe.

This probably belongs more in C&C, not C&C Quickies.

If this thread could be moved to C&C, that would be great

Another "because I can" set - snakes as a separate class from reptiles/amphibians. This includes legless lizards, as Vana taxonomy is based broadly on morphology.

Delays can be all blamed on the TES series.

This took so long. *bangs head against desk* Between there being too few distinctive, non-domestic canids, trying to find reference pictures amid floods of furry art, not being able to get the glyphs looking canine enough, pondering doing coloured versions of glyphs, reinstalling Morrowind...

gvv̀rg - Dogs

nvr̀j - Lycaon pictus (Kinesis)

nvj̄j - Bat-Eared Fox (Metamorphosis)

Includes the striped hyena.

njr̀jn - Fox (Synthesis)
Represented by a red fox, includes foxes and similar not included under fennec.

njr̄vg - Wolf (Telesis)

The other set of wolves. "Southern"-type wolves, slender, short haired, including the golden jackal.

njj́vg - Black-Backed Jackal (Analysis)

gvj̄rg - Maned Wolf (Ascesis)

gvv́g - Spotted Hyena (Physis)

grr̀g - Side-Striped Jackal (Noesis)

grj̄g - Bush Dog (Gnosis)

To critisize a little, I think that your snakes are too similar to one another, and the hood of the cobra isn't clear enough. I also think that your foxes look too much like wolves.
Anguipes wrote:pondering doing coloured versions of glyphs
I was just gonna ask if there was gonna be colored glyphs, like the Egyptians and Mayans/Aztecs used to do? And if so, will there be a specific color scheme, i.e. will you limit yourself to a set of specific hues?
