But if you believe in powerful gods, how stupid do you have to be not to try to at least not piss them off?

The kind of stupid where you don't immediately and narcissistically assume that the behavior of each and every intelligence you come across revolves around what you do and fail to do, for example.

I mean I'll grant that "unable to invent imaginary intelligences" describes a thoroughly retarded mind, sure, but from there to "the gods care about what you personally do and don't" is a huge leap. the whole "pattern>intelligent patternsmith>intelligent pattersmith who gives a shit about me>intelligent patternsmith who I can personally influence the behavior of through performing some acts and abstaining from performing some other acts" *does* seem very particular. and while none of those steps can be barred by a presentable pluripotential psychology <i.e. a mind that is not comically crippled>, there is absolutely no reason to think all those steps have to be as much of a path of least resistence for other kinds of minds.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It wouldn't do to have servants or followers having aspirations or powers more powerful or "higher" than their masters. More difficult to control.

That's what I was saying with my comment on Leviticus. If "desert intelligence" says follow 'follow the Law of this book or I destroy you', even if it contains strange rituals, they'd probably follow the Law.

What Torco and Bofosh are talking about sounds reasonable to me.

Maybe I can get on with a third already? 8)

I'm wondering if I should do a third one as well, seeing as we have an extra week now. The more cultures there are, the more interesting it is. Thinking about making a golem culture if I have got them figured out.

I think I'll go with N12 with golems for a second culture now that there's more time.

Amazing, you had almost the same idea as me. I'm grabbing C12, also for golems.

I was just looking at how the arctic continent was actually formed, and realized there is some major pinching going on. If we use the projection zompist mentioned in the initial post, i.e. the height of the squares does not vary, then we get this:

Image

If we treat the map as equirectangular, we get this:

The arctic continent looks kind of weird either way, it seems.

yeah, I had that happen to me at the ATLAS forumworld as well... there's really no way around it other than smoothing the continent to an absurd degree :P

When I made the climate map, I assumed that there's 1.5 extra squares at the top and bottom that aren't shown. That would reduce the pinching somewhat.

I stake a night people claim [Uimg]http://i.imgur.com/DaTcZGH.png[/img]. Yeah, I know I'm late- I just want a nice, even number, y'know.

EDIT: The image is so damn clunky I have made it only able to be seen if you copied the link, removed the extra "U", then previewed the link.

This. It means that the N/S height is a little smaller, but that's livable for the sake of reducing distortion.

(With the planet a tad smaller, as in the Planet thread, the squares are 900 km wide at the equator, and 800 km high.)

An extra 1.5 squares in the north and south gives a much more reasonable-looking continent:

I'm claiming C-7r for (Hydro's) Sexies, Munkees, Ksinesir, Humans, and Golems (sort of).

Keep in mind you are claiming the space immediately above Zontas's nightpeople, who are at C-8r. Not sure if you noticed his claim on that one, since he didn't actually write it in his post anywhere.

Ah, I didn't know that, thanks. What I have in mind doesn't really work so close to someone else, so I'll move this claim to E-8r.

There's only one amphibimorph culture, despite the species coming in 6th (above dragons, ranked 8th, but with 3 cultures described). So, if I have time, I'm going to try to create an amphibimorph culture on T1r (actually due to the geography I think I will have to take a sliver of T1 as well (because most of T1r is open sea and won't be used). Mainly I will use the low elevation area on the eastern side of that island.

As I recall, Zompist was talking about populating the unclaimed squares with "npc" cultures to bring the relative influence of the different races into line with the last round of voting.

I did. But the map came out so messy you have to follow my instructions for it to work.

EDIT: Better version I finally managed to do: Image

With all those diverse species spread all over the place you get a real feeling of an ancient culture that's just shattered and been left in remnants all over the world. Well, it's better to say that than try to struggle fitting in an evolutionary explanation.

I like the way the cultures are forming. Now lets see how the fragments reorganise themselves!

Updated map showing latest claims:

(Zontas, your two posts indicated two different squares. This is why everyone else uses the map grid. :) )
