Need PIE conjugation and declension tables for conlang.

Post by Matrix »

Wiktionary doesn't provide them for Proto-Indo-European like it does for, say, Latin or Proto-Germanic.

Wikipedia has has some things, like this table for nouns, but there are apparently three genders, which this table doesn't even touch on. Plus, I have no idea which roots are thematic and which are athematic.

Also, I think I need a root list too, because Wiktionary's is not looking particularly extensive.

Andrew Sihler's New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin has paradigms of declensions and conjugations, though despite mentioning many roots he does not include a root list. He is of course mainly focused on the results in Greek and Latin.

Eh? Where were you looking? I got it on Amazon for $51.49 including shipping, and it was hardcover too! It was used, I'll concede but the quality was nearly brand-new. It's currently lying on my living room desk.

Hopefully Sihler's book should be available at some libraries (university libraries if you have access), but yeah, it costs monies.

Also, Kath's link contains a pdf of Sihler's book, so nice!

That's sadly true for all Linguistics books. Indo-European Language and Culture by Benjamin Fortson IV is more than a fucking grand for the hardcover version.

I know, I have a copy, though I paid around 60 for it because I wanted to keep it. But these books just cost exorbitant amounts of money in general.

Wikipedia has has some things, like this table for nouns, but there are apparently three genders, which this table doesn't even touch on.
That page, while not perfect (and obviously there are also disagreements), pretty much contains what you need - other than generally reading it, try scrolling down to the example table.
The genders don't matter much. The two key things are: neuters don't distinguish accusative and nominative; feminines ending in -e2 usually treat that -e2 as a thematic vowel. And there, you're set.
Plus, I have no idea which roots are thematic and which are athematic.
In the example table, the thematic ones are what it calls o-stems (masculine and neuter) and e2-stems (feminine). The others are athematic, and include several rare categories.
In general, the three things to consider are:
- the endings, which are the same for all the categories (more or less)
- vowel alternation in athematic nouns (o/e or e:/e)
- stress movement (and resulting vowel changes)

Oh, and nominative -s becomes final vowel lengthening when the word ends -VS where S=mnlr.

I don't think it's best to think of thematic or athematic roots. Rather, these are ways of inflecting. Generally the idea is that primary nouns start off athematic and derived nouns (from verbs or adjectives) start off thematic (there are exceptions - there's a bunch of athematic derivative endings), but over time more and more athematic nouns start acting like thematic nouns instead.
Also, I think I need a root list too, because Wiktionary's is not looking particularly extensive.
Good luck with that... so far as I know, these either don't exist or are out of date. Your best bet to be going on with is goatman's excel spreadsheet. If you want to supplement that, try looking at etymological dictionaries of the various families.

Is the link to said spreedsheet in this thread somewhere? I may have missed it.

As far as I've been able to determine, all of the Indo-European lexicons readily available online are based on Pokorny's Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, so they all look pretty similar to the Wiktionary appendix.

I've asked Morrígan for a link to the spreadsheet if there still is one - result is pending.

Edit: Try this.

You say that like it's a bad thing. The spreadsheet's a .csv. It's a bit of a pain to import it properly into Excel. Play with it and it should work (which is what she said.) If not, I can upload and share the spreadsheet I've been using (which is when I finally got it imported), but keep in mind it's not my information but Morrigan's.
