Game: Let's Reform English

Post by Daedolon »

OK people, I have played this game in the other place and there it worked relatively well.

The topic is, as the title says, a stepwise reformation of English grammar and phonology.

Below there is a sample text in English. Each participant adds a grammar/phonology rule and then change the text to reflect the new rule. The following player accepts the revised text, and also adds a new rule. Every post has to introduce at least one new rule, but also don't add six hundred rules on a single post. Besides that, you can just be as creative or uncreative as you want.

The game ends when the text's language can't be classified/understood as English any more.

Therefore, I propose the following text:

<The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when a traveler came along wrapped in a warm cloak.>
/ðə ˈnoɹθ ˌwɪnd ən ðə ˈsʌn wɚ dɪsˈpjutɪŋ ˈwɪtʃ wəz ðə ˈstɹɑŋɡɚ, wɛn ə ˈtɹævəlɚ ˌkem əˈlɑŋ ˈɹæpt ɪn ə ˈwoɹm ˈkloʊk./

I'm not sure "reform" is the word you're looking for, exactly, but this looks like fun.

Rule 1: Voiceless stops in syllable codas are reduced to a glottal stop, unless they are preceded by another voiceless consonant

Rule 2: Voiced stops in elide following a homorganic nasal

Rule 3: Voiced stops in syllable codas become voiceless

Rule 4: [θ] becomes [t] in syllable codas

<The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when a traveler came along wrapped in a warm cloak.>
/ðə ˈnoɹt ˌwɪn ən ðə ˈsʌn wɚ dɪsˈpjutɪŋ ˈwɪtʃ wəz ðə ˈstɹɑŋɚ, wɛn ə ˈtɹævəlɚ ˌkem əˈlɑŋ ˈɹæʔt ɪn ə ˈwoɹm ˈkloʊʔ./

I get the feeling that this game might not last very long, but I'm prepared to be proven wrong.

1. Diphthongs lose the nonsyllabic bit (monophthongizing).
2. Vowel + /ɹ/ sequences become long vowels; /ɚ/ :> /ɛː/.
3. /ɛ/ and /ʌ/ merge to the former.
4. The indefinite article is dropped.

<Ðe Nóut Winn enn ðe Sen wé dispiúting wich wes ðe strangué, wen traevelé cueim elang raepd in wóum clouc.>
/ðə ˈnoːt ˌwɪn ən ðə ˈsɛn wɛː dɪsˈpjuːtɪŋ ˈwɪtʃ wəz ðə ˈstɹɑŋɛː, wɛn ˈtɹævəlɛː ˌkem əˈlɑŋ ˈɹæʔt ɪn ˈwoːm ˈkloʔ./

1. All vowels are nasalized before nasal consonants.
2. All nasal vowels in coda positions (noting that a final nasal followed by a vowel in the next word is not included) are elided.
3. Elision of initial unstressed vowels followed by subsequent syllables.
4. All close and near-close nasal vowels become close-mid; all close-mid nasal vowels become open-mid; all open-mid nasal vowels become near-open;

<The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger, when traveler came along wrapped in warm cloak.>
/ðə ˈnoːt ˌwẽn ɐ̃ ðə ˈsæ̃ wɛː dɪsˈpjuːtẽ ˈwɪtʃ wəz ðə ˈstɹɑ̃ŋɛː, wæ̃ ˈtɹævəlɛː ˌkɛ̃ ˈlɑ̃ ˈɹæʔt ẽ ˈwɔ̃ː ˈkloʔ./

1. All stops followed by /j/ are made into fricatives. (So /pj/ :> /φ/)
2. Stops are dropped before and/or after fricatives and affricates, BUT NOT LIQUIDS. (So /t∫/ :> /∫/, /st/ :> /s/, NOT /tɹ/ :> /ɹ/)
3. Long vowels before stops are given a high tone and lose length; long vowels on their own take a medium tone and lose length. (˥, ˧, ˩)
4. The indefinite article is dropped.

PS. For the sake of space, tones are indicated at the end of the word. Not sure if this is the proper way, but if it isn't I'll correct it later.

<North Wind and Sun were disputing which was stronger, when traveler came along wrapped in warm cloak.>

First change: æ ɑ > ɛ ɔ
Second change: w > v
Third change: Conjunctions become enclitics.
Fourth change: Adjectives come after the head nouns they modify.

<Wind North Sunand were disputing which was stronger, when traveler came along wrapped in cloak warm.>

  1. <wr> :> <r>; all other occurrences of <w wh> :> <v>.
  2. <th> :> <t>
  3. /ɛ/ is now consistently spelled <e>. After <c>, that letter becomes <k>.
  4. Silent vowels drop in the spelling except that the <ed> past tense marker retains its <e>.
  5. /ɹ sɹ tɹ/ :> /ɽ ʂ ʈ/
<Vind Nort Senand ver disputing vich vas stronger, ven traveler kem long repped in cloak varm.>

1. Nasals are lost after a nasal vowel.
2. Low-tone vowels lower, while high-tone vowels heighten. Tone is lost.
3. /ɸ/ becomes /h/
4. Rhinoglottophilia. Glottals are lost.
5. Nasal vowels heighten. High nasal vowels become /n̩/. Nasality is lost.

1. Syllabic ɥ becomes y (less a phonological change than an orthographic one).
2. An epenthetic is inserted before syllabic consonants in stressed syllables.
3. Unstressed syllabic consonants merge with [a]
4. A glottal stop breaks up vowels in hiatus

I think that it is safe to say that the text doesn't look like English anymore. So let's start again.

<Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. 1. Tensing /ɪ/ between a consonant and a vowel to /j/.
  2. Reduction of unstressed /ɪ/ and /ɪ̃/ to /ɨ/ and /ɨ̃/.
  3. Insertion of /j/ before initial front vowels and between front vowels and preceding vowels in hiatus.
  4. Palatalization of consonants except /w j/, including in entire clusters, before front vowels and /j/; palatalization of further consonants is blocked by /w/.
  5. Further palatalization of /ɬʲ/ to /ç/ and /lʲ/ to /ʎ/.

  1. Nasal vowels heighten and high nasal vowels lose nasality.
  2. Palatal stops become completely palatalised.
  3. Palatal clusters mose palatalisation to final consonant.
  4. Plosives and affricates become fully voiced intervocalically.

  1. The singular-plural distinction has been lost. Plural nouns become the same as their singular counterparts, and simple present-tense verbs regularize to the plural form (including irregular verbs).
  2. /tʃ dʒ/ :> /ʃ ʒ/ EXCEPT word initially and before a stressed vowel.
