ZBB Lexicon Sculpting

Post by k1234567890y »

This is basically a thread that helps you find inspirations to expand the vocabulary of your conlangs, especially if you are creating an a priori conlang, this idea is originally suggested in this CBB thread: http://aveneca.com/cbb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2997 . Thanks Prinsessa of CBB for suggesting this kind of idea!

How to play: person A suggests a word, with its meaning and word class in his or her conlang, then person B copies the word into his or her conlang and adjusts the pronunciation to fit the phonology of the conlang of person B. The meaning of the word might be adjusted as well.

For example:
person A wrote: didnozsawr /didnoz'sɑwr/ adj. be bureaucratic
person B wrote:
person A wrote: didnozsawr /didnoz'sɑwr/ adj. be bureaucratic
Lonmai Luna:
dinosaur /dinosáur/ adj. be bureaucratic

Next: opon /opón/ v. to control
If you have known how to play, then let's start:

opon /opón/ v. to control
See here for a short introduction of some of my conlangs: http://cals.conlang.org/people/472

What does the acute mean? Stress accent? Or indeed high tone?

Anyway, here’s my adaptation (No. 4):
öpfön [op͡fˈon] v. to control

Next: djịnc [d͡ʑɪnʃ] (piece of) music, tune
My version of the SCA²

About my conlangs: No. 1 is my proto-language, and No. 4, my main conlang, is one of its descendants. I’m currently revising 4, calling it 4a.

Oh cool, I always thought this was a neat idea!

For Yewedu:

ǰîš /dʒi̤ːʃ/ noun (class VIII) song, music

Declension:

Nominative: ǰîš
Accusative: ǰîšu
Genitive: ǰîše
Dative: ǰîšû
Locative: ǰîšut
Instrumental: ǰîšesà
Comitative: ǰîšeš
Benefactive: ǰîšeke

Next: zisk [tsɪsk] knife

Adapted into No. 4:
tcịsk [t͡ɕɪsk] knife, dagger, sword or any blade weapon

‘Reverse’ sound change to No. 1 (actually I looked for a No. 1 word that would transform into something that fits [t͡sisk]):
tsgsk [tsŋsk] (same meaning)

And no, I’m not going to give you a declension. (Unless you ask nicely.)

Next: rubwasd [ˈʁɔʊ̯.b͡vəst] to serve so.
My version of the SCA²

About my conlangs: No. 1 is my proto-language, and No. 4, my main conlang, is one of its descendants. I’m currently revising 4, calling it 4a.

Just for fun, I've thought a bit about the etymology of ǰîš. In Wendoth, an ancestor of Yewedu and a family of sister languages, it could have taken a number of forms, since most polysyllabic words basically lost their whole first syllable as a result of a series of sound changes. Let's say the Wendoth form is įgaic [ḭgʲa̤i̯xʲ] in the nominative and įgaice- before suffixes beginning in a consonant. Going back a step further, that would make the "pre-Wendoth" form ʔVgeɦVxi, where the unknown vowels could have been any of /a/, /e/, or /i/.

Anyway, back on topic, here's a word for ʔuulhemoo, part of Akana's Western language family. The structure is a little unusual, but it could possibly be a loanword or an old, eroded compound.

rụụvst [ɹʊːʋst] monotransitive verb to serve, to obey, to work for

Next: gangle [ˈgɑŋlə] - to be confident, to have confidence

It's a clitic in the language. So whatever it is attached to will determine stress.

Alright, so I’ll follow the native stress on the first syllable:
