Well, everybody, Lexember is here again. Let's not forget the reason for the season: the expansion of the vocabulary of a beloved conlang ... or, in my case this year, the creation of vocabulary from scratch for a language that did not have a name before today. This year, I have also a created a Lexember tumblr, so I will be crossposting.

Day 1: Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą /vàqʼõ̀ʔ nã̀ʃã́/ n. “the Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą language”

< /wàqòᵑɡ/ “jaw.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /nã̀g/ “people, folk” (cf. /nã̀ᵑɡ/ “face, facing”) + /a ː / “3ᴘʟ.ᴘᴏss” (clitic)

lit. “our people’s jaw”. Note semi-regular ejective neutralisation and accompanying high tone: /nã̀gàː/ > /nã̀kʼàː/ > /nã̀kàː/ > /nã̀ʃã́/. Treated regularly as one word, we would expect the final outcome to be /nã̀kʼã̀/. The 3ᴘʟ.ᴘᴏss clitic regularly assimilates nasalisation from a neighboring syllable.

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 2: dhązēdh ngó /ðã̀zèːð ŋoː˨˦/ n. “owl”

< /ⁿdã̀ʒéːd/ “night” + /gòʔ/ “dive” + /òʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ”

lit. “night-diver”

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 3: qhāhta /χáːhtá/ n. “scrubland, heath, arid lands with some tree cover near a desert”

< /qáː/ “not intense, to a low degree, weak, sickly” + /stàː/ “woods”

lit. “weak woods”. That this was an early compound is indicated by the shortening of the vowel in the second syllable.

< /tèːk/ “grow, live” + /àʔ/ “ʀɴᴍᴢ”

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 8: káhqhęmá /kaː˦˥hχẽ́maː˨˦/ n. “ravine, stream, brook”

< /kàːʔ/ “hill” + /ʃqẽ́ː/ “to whisper” + /(m)òʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ”

lit. “hill-whisperer”. Note that “hill” usually appears in an extended form derived from /kàːʔᵑɡą̀/. /o/ in the agent nominalizer regularly becomes /a/ in this word due to vowel harmony.

It's plenty taken off from my perspective. Lots of Lexember activity on conlang-l and tumblr. Not sure what the Zeeb's deal is.

On the contrary, Lexember is quite busy in the CONLANG-L and Twitter realms.

For Lexember the 12th, I decided to publish a short story in my conlang Lortho. Here is the story:

The Unlucky Fox

Romanization:

Code:

Once upon a time, there was the fox

Code:

search-PST-3MSG fox.M food.N -ACC-but  NEG-be  -PST-3NSG much.ADJ PN.3NSG

The fox searched for food, but there was not much of it

It saw a huge tree

Its favorite food was in that tree

When the fox scratched the tree, the tree closed its wall (here it means bark) and buried (trapped) the fox's head

Code:
thar-ikh-u    bonhan mon  -u saurammu thasa -me  nuphi-nalo
eat -PST-3FSG twenty other-F animal.F head.N-ACC fox.M-GEN

Twenty other animals ate the fox's body

I know this story is quite morbid and has the unexpected twist; however, this explains why calling someone a "fox" is a derogatory term. Besides, I only have just under 400 words, so this is quite the accomplishment for me.

The term "fox" is loosely applied here since it is the closest animal we on Earth have that looks remotely like the nuphi

Don't worry, I remember I had a professor who pointed out that linguists tend to like using morbid examples anyway. ;)

Nothing accentuates the roles of agent and patient so much as the act of killing.

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 13: kahsāhe /káhsáːhé/ v. “to forage, to search for food, to gather edible wild plants, to engage in harmless gossip”

< /kàʃt͡ʃáb/ “food.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /sì/ “ᴠʙᴢ”

lit. “to food”. Note that this term can be used with an animal or human subject with somewhat different meanings. Of humans, it normally means specifically gathering berries, roots, and other wild-growing plant material. Of animals, it refers to various behaviours in which the animal appears to be searching for food, with the exception of stalking large prey, e.g. prey larger than a mouse.

< /sqìː/ “bone.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /ʀòzóː/ “medicine”

lit. “medicine bone”, referring to the use of condor bones in folk medicine. Replaced the earlier rahśeʔ after the latter began to be applied to other birds of prey.
