Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 19: soʔo /sóʔó/ n. “kid, baby goat”

< /t͡ʃòʔó/ < ? Old Emp. **/t͡ʃùʔá/ < Proto-Western *kyuʔna “goat”

note that the borrowing seems to have occurred after the loss of /ʔ/ and its reintroduction via glottalised /p/.

This year's december appears to plot against me doing much conlanging, but I've still managed to come up with a couple of new words for Ndok Aisô, so here's a massive catch-up post. Most of the word meanings are inspired in some way by other people's Lexember posts here, on the CBB, or on the Conlang Mailing List:

1) ristêd (v.) [C-II] 'have bad luck, have circumstances conspire against you, be thwarted' < Ndak Ta risten 'lose (habitually)'

2) miskeu (v.) [C-III] 'blame, accuse' < NT miskwi 'blame'

3) ndêbuteu (v.) [C-I] 'forgive, pardon' < NT ndimu ta 'mercy-DYNAMIC'

4) moiboi (v.erg) [C-V] 'sleep' < NT maubai 'not active'

7a) estelteu (v.) [A-I] 'burn, ignite, set on fire; anger, upset' < NT estela ta 'burn-DYNAMIC'

8) gets (adv.) 'likely' < NT gets 'likely'

9) goit (adj.) 'easy, simple, trivial, boring' < NT gaut 'dull'

10) gêheu (adj.) 'hard, solid, sturdy, durable' < NT gingko 'hard'

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 20: keʔt'a laa /kéʔtʼà làː/ v. “yareta, cushion plant”

< /skèːgdà/ “flower.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /láː/ “green (one), leaf”

reduction of wíhx̣e keʔt'a laa, lit. “green flower-rock”. The first vowel in keeʔt'a should regularly be long but is generally realised as short, creating an audible contrast between keʔt'a laa "yareta" vs. keeʔt'a laa "green flower".

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 21: γąʔlaá /ɣã̀ʔlǎ̀ː/ “solstice”

< /ᵑɡã̀t/ “taut (one), coiled (one)” + /lóʔ/ “height, astronomical position”

lit. “taut height” or “taut position”. /lóʔ/ appears to be an archaic nominalisation related to /lób/ “high”. /lóʔ/ appears in terms related to the paths and locations of the sun, moon, stars, and other astronomical bodies.

< /pàg/ “thin, slender (one)” + /ʃkẽ̀ⁿd/ “making a shrill, high-pitched, loud sound, to scream, to shriek” + /òʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ”

lit. "thin screamer”, referring to the distinctive high-pitched noises made by pumas. Note contraction of /ʃkã̀ⁿdàʔ/ to the equivalent of /ʃkã̀ːʔ/.

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 23: taγ̇ŋaáhe /táʀŋǎ̀ːhé/ v. “to carry out reciprocal interpersonal obligations”

< /tàʀgáːʔ/ “reciprocal interpersonal obligation” + /sì/ “ᴠʙᴢ”

I'm going to be offline for the next week, but I'm posting the rest of my Lexember entries here today. Zeeb readers get special sneak preview of what will appear daily on http://kwaco.tumblr.com!

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 24: weehaá /wèːhǎ́ː/ “caul, amnion, uterus, abdomen (of women)”

/bé/ “to drape” + /ʃoʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ (locational)”

lit. “that which drapes” > “shroud”. Use in the sense of “shroud” is obsolete. Note that /ʃoʔ/ regularly lengthens preceding short vowels in monosyllabic roots.

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 25: t’omoó / tʼòmǒ̀ː/ n. “heir, (succeeding) generation”

< /dòb/ “take (obs.), inherit” + /òʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ”

lit. “taker”

cf. Tmaśareʔ tomo “generation, era”?

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 26: γęę́śiih /ɣẽ̌̀ːʃíːh/ n. “daughter-in-law”

< /ᵑɡìʔ/ “other (not the speaker’s own) lineage” + /skī̀ptò/ “enter” + /ʃoʔ/ “ᴀɴᴍᴢ (locational)”

lit. “enterer from another lineage”, referring to Nąśą customs of patrilocal marriage. Note drastic contraction of /skìːptòʃòʔ/ “enterer”, regularly śiiʔtohoó but here śiih.

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 27: tohmę /tóhmẽ̀/ n. “cactus”

< /tòʃ/ “hair” + /mẽ́/ “tooth, thorn”

lit. “hair-thorn”, referring to the woolly areoles found on many cactus species. Note that the first element more commonly appears in an extended form derived from /tàʃà/, and that is no longer commonly used in the sense of “thorn”.

cf. Tmaśareʔ tohmę id.?

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 28: ʔehθeleé /ʔéhθélě̀ː/ “(giant) hummingbird”

< /pèʃté/ “fertile, young wife.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /àʔ/ “ᴀʙsᴛʀ” + /lèʔàː/ “rust-colored, sienna, a type of a clay noted for its colour”

lit. “sienna fertility”, referring to the association of hummingbirds with fertility in folk culture. The suffix /àʔ/ used here to form abstract nouns from root substantives, appears to the same morpheme used with verbs to derive result nominalisations. In this instance, however, irregular syncope has reduced this morpheme effectively to ∅.

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 29: koʔę /kóʔẽ́/ n. “thoughts, feelings, mind, mindset, mood”

< /kòp/ “to think, to feel” + /ẽ/ “ᴄᴏʟʟ.ʀɴᴍᴢ”

note: often used in construct form, śaʔę (with palatalisation of /k/ > /ʃ/ when followed by /a/), such as in phrases describing a type of mood or mindset. cf. Tmaśareʔ śaʔę “mind”?

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 30: leeyaʔe /lèːjàʔé/ “lomas terrain, fog oasis”

< /léː/ “green (one), leaf.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /jópì/ “difficult, remote”

lit. “remote green”. In this sense, yoʔi refers to locations that are difficult to get to because of distance coupled with aggravating factors such as bad terrain.

Vaq’ǫ̀ʔ Nąśą day 31: śaree /ʃárèː/ “raider, invader”

cf. śaraz < /kàzáʒ/ “to ambush, to waylay, to raid”, śaraá “clash, multi-person violence, chaos, dissension”. Relationship to the middle element of the word Tmaśareʔ remains uncertain.
