From my thread where I asked for some translation help:
mèþru wrote:[*]Telly is so stereotypically British it wears a bobby (UK slang for police) uniform and a monocle while sipping tea.
Salmoneus wrote:
[*]I turn on the telly and lay underneath the warm and moist duvet.
I thought telly was only used in BrE, but according to Wiktionary it can be either or. Is this true?
*screams* AAAAHHH! No! No! No!
Oh, sorry, that wasn't about the telly. That was the shiver of automatic disgust at someone laying under a moist duvet.
*takes time to shudder some more and avoid vomiting*
I'm not one of those weird people who hate the word 'moist'. But the threshold of 'moist' is way too high for non-insanitary duvets*. Is there mould growing in his duvet? Has he urinated in his bed? Is it... I don't know, dripping with semen? Even a wet duvet would somehow be better, then he'd probably have had a flooding accident or something, but 'moist'? That's just horrifying.

*Originally wrote 'sanitary duvet'. Hmm. Perhaps now. Damn you, euphemistic "sanitary towels" for ruining a perfectly good word...

I dunno if we ever made an official name for the law that says that for any
feature you can think up for a conlang, no matter how freaky, there is at
least one natlang that's already doing it, except ten times worse. If not, we
should give it a shortish name for easy reference.

Anyway, I just realized that Telenzh has ended up with a pretty scary set of
voiceless affricates; bilabial, dental, alveolar, postalveolar and velar. To
this comes alveolar and postalveolar voiced ones. Anyone know of a natlang
with this many, or even more affricates?

Hmm. I've yet to find a natlang with a case system that resembles
Ebisedian's. Not that I doubt it, just that I haven't found any yet.

How about ANADEW? A Natlang's Already Dunnit Except Worse. :-)

Salmoneus wrote:I have never put my hands together above my head and stared blankly at someone to indicate "OK". And the symbol Kath suggests I recognise as "bunny ears shadow", "half of an obscene gesture", "thing that Donald Trump does all the time", and "naff way of expressing that something, usually food, is perfect, or that someone has done something excellent." Given the latter, I'd find using it for "OK" misleading.
I interpret Axiem's latest as "not knowing where an item is", "being shocked", or "character in Californian high school drama is pleased to meet a friend". I'm not sure whether she means it here to mean surprise or perplexity. Surely, just saying "I'm surprised people on a geeky hobbyist board can't interpret my implicit social cues perfectly" would be both quicker to do and easier to understand?

I mean I can see the point of sometimes having a smily face or a frowny face or a winky face, although in my experience even these are more trouble than they're worth (because it's hard to read tone in short written messages, so it's hard to judge if a smile is sarcastic or a frown is in jest, and using the symbols instead of words tends to mean there's less effort to make tone clear in the words). But the weird sign language stuff where you have to be asking yourself "what would a gesture that that sort of looks like mean to an audience of Japanese teenagers?" all the time.... it accomplishes nothing, and even if you really WANT to be inscrutable it's still much quicker just to type *makes an inscrutable gesture* or the like.

Pole, the wrote:Of course the Solar eclipses are not caused by the Moon, but the article is false. Solar exlipses happen because there is no such an entity as a celestial body called “Sun”. What we perceive as the Sun is in reality the earthshine focused by a translucent planet called Kerbik and projected onto the celestial dome. During a Solar eclipse, Kerbik gets directly between the Moon and the Earth so no earthlight can be dispersed. As to why the Sun appears to be brighter than the Earth — that's what happens when you put a large dim light through a lens and focus it. By the way, rainbows are also caused by the light being dispersed by Kerbik. By the way, homosexuality is evil.
