I think this is a good idea, honestly. People's fear of it seems to be based much more on a gut reaction to the concept than on hard science.

I like ils' political links. I've seen similar ideas to the first article before, but not worked out in such detail. Sounds like the former French President Chirac had the right analysis. He thought we were moving towards a multipolar world.

If the article has probably the right analysis of the future, we cannot see further. Who would have guessed EU and China would be great superpowers in the future? Even though India and other countries are now lagging, they are lagging the way China or EU were as well in the past. But I actually like the idea the US won't be alone now. Go EU.

I know. It's just amusing.

And a gut reaction? Pun intended?

This is a bit of a misrepresentation, Hoku. And although I'm not Catholic I happen to agree with his quoted statements in this article.
Reuters, quoting Il Papa, wrote:"When human beings in the weakest and most defenseless state of their existence are selected, abandoned, killed or used as pure 'biological material,' how can one deny that they are being treated not as 'someone' but as 'something,'" he said.

Such practices "questioned the very concept of the dignity of man," he said ...

Well at least someone's being consistent about it. Usually people I query about it say 'Well I don't have any problem with artificial insemination, it's lovely that people are trying to have more kids' then I ask 'Well then how is using the embryos for research worse than them getting thrown into the trash, which is what happens with them otherwise?'. They usually deny it happens or change the subject. So thanks for at least being consistent, even if I don't agree with you.

Bah, Tubgirl is passé. If you're really going for shock, you'd have to go "2 girls, 1 cup." And I'm guessing no, neither one would be accepted.

Oh, and if you don't know what "2 girls, 1 cup" is, don't look it up. Or at the very least, just read a (relatively) safe text description. Don't watch the video. There are some things that, no matter how much your bleeding eyes may beg, cannot be unseen... :|

Bah, it's just another lame kids-today rant.

How exactly has the internet made people stupid? All his example might show is that stupid people have access to the internet now, not that the internet has made them stupid. I very much doubt the internet has made anyone stupid. If anything, it's made them smarter.

And was the person in the example actually stupid, anyway? Aside from the fact that they apparently don't know about libraries, the post requires both knowledge of the importance of saving money (something that, I hear, a number of kids lack) and a bit of creative thinking to find a solution to this problem. So they're clearly not an idiot. Either they somehow went through life without discovering libraries, or they had a brainfart, but either way they're not stupid enough to inspire soul death.

The idiot here is this "JeffSimmermon" guy who is so "outraged" at "this little asshole" and has conjured up an entire detestable stereotyped image based on that single post, one that he wants to forcefeed "Steven [sic!] King paperbacks", because of obviously Stephen King makes you smrat.
And to a lesser extent, the sheep who buy into the meme that the apocalypse is nigh and the internet/mobile phones/rap music is ruining the younger generation and talk about "weeping for the future" and their "soul dying". Those guys are lame.

Some rather haunting photos of an abandoned theme park. (From Satoru Toma's site containing a number of great abandonment photosets.)

Things you could only see in Russia. Also rather striking: a day at the beach in South Korea.

Actually, kids of any recent generation would have to be painfully and extremely stupid not to know what a library is. Grade schools come equipped with libraries. I'm with Jeff on this one: "And since when have you seen an advertisement for a library? What next, commercials for the bathroom?"

(In fact, our local public library does have ad campaigns, but never mind.)
How exactly has the internet made people stupid?
I think he may just be speaking a little tongue-in-cheek.

Apparently even a text description is not safe, so here is an article about the looks people get when they watch it.

I do think brainfart is the more likely explanation. But you do not have to be "painfully and etremely stupid" not to know what a library is, because even stupid people know what libraries are. I don't think any amount of stupidity could explain it.

Either something's wrong with their quote, or....
