Here's: the sea level rise map Your guide to where not to live to avoid flooding.

Tab through to the map of your choice, then navigate as per Google Maps with the arrows, and zoom in and out with the plus and minus buttons. Input a sea-level rise and watch the map adjust!

It is only indicative though - follow the link in the small print to read up on the assumptions behind the map.
This is great, thanks.

I am pretty safe where I am right now, about 500m (1650 ft) above sea level.

But my most likely next urban area of residence isn't so hot (or so high, I should say). I guess I should avoid buying a house in Richmond or Delta, rock-bottom (or should I say, sea-bottom?) as the prices may be by that time. :)

I had no idea that 14 meters would destroy half of the Delta. So low... so low... and there isn't lot of space... I got a look of Montreal. We finally could call Pointe-aux-Trembles Montreal Beach :P

Presidential election edition

Special US Presidential Election Edition!

Remember that embarrassing gaffe when John McCain seemed to be confused about Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero's identity? Turns out he wasn't confused, he meant to insult the guy. It's a relief to see McCain distancing himself from the failed policies of the Bush Administration, which hasn't bothered to insult Prime Minister Zapatero in years.

But it's not all sunshine and roses for the McCain campaign, whose candidate has been edged out by Obama in polling on one of the most serious issues facing America today.

Not only that, the worst civil rights violation in the history of modern civilization has happened to Sarah Palin, and meanwhile the unhinged left is indulging in a vicious enfilade of bigotry against the time-honoured American pastime of voter suppression.

However, the fundamentals of the economy are strong, and times like these at least we can all reflect on this feel-good human interest story from the Republican National Convention.

This raises a good question: are people more likely to want to spend time with their favourite candidate or more likely to vote for the candidate they find most congenial?

I liked the story from the RNC - why on Earth did he feel the need to take all that gear to a party convention? People are odd, sometimes!

Glad people liked the climate change map. I found it partly a relief, partly worrying. I already knew my current home would beis safe - 300 feet / 100 metres high. I expected my childhood home, north of Liverpool, wouldn't be safe, but it's only vulnerable to a high sea-level rise. OTOH the danger to London is worse than I thought, as is the threat to the main river estuary here in Yorkshire. Like it says in the small print though, this is partly dependent on our not doing anything to mitigate things.

Talking of the US economy, I was amused by this piece on NewsBiscuit:

This is a bit old, but a mosque in Ohio was attacked by two men. Did I mention I sometimes fucking hate this country?

They must have had stomachs of iron to ride in the awful machine. Leaving New Orleans also frightened me considerably. Outside of the city limits the heart of darkness, the true wasteland begins."

Though it's just google maps, I thought it'd be worth posting a link to the Roman ruins of Pompeii. I knew the ruins existed, of course, but I never realized such a substantial city had been unearthed.

Phew, yeah. Talk about a picture painting a thousand words. Powerful, yet understated. I guess people searching for "older guys AND young girls" will go to her site and find it wasn't quite what they were looking for - so it was a clever move to stick them on the internet.

On a lighter note - WMiller's music vid - brilliant! Yet again YouTube shows how varied and odd human creativity is. :)

Pompeii, yeah, it's huge. I camped near there once and took a tour. You get "Pompeiied out" after a while if it's hot, but still worth a visit. Some of the murals and mosaics were still in good condition when I saw them in the 80s. I combined it with a trip up Vesuvius and a ride on a metre-gauge railway called the Circumvesuviana, both also enjoyable.

Very creepy and sad
There seem to be a lot of different factors at play, with poverty present across the board but some cases being driven by considerations of tradition, others by out-and-out desperation. The stories of people in Afghanistan marrying off their children at eight and ten for the dowry money reminds me of old tales of addicts selling off children to finance opium habits in 19th-century China. The self-immolations are especially haunting.

Markus Neidel provides a macabre overview of the ever-churning digestive system of the oneiric-ovine industrial complex in Way of the Sheep.

The pioneering television broadcasts of the Third Reich are chronicled in Television Under the Swastika.
