You have easily enough minions here to guilt them into doing it for you.zompist wrote:Kindle requires HTML format while everything else takes PDF, so that's a hassle.
BTW: Another sale here as well. Especially if the German edition will be offered for sale. Personally, I'd love to see the LCK translated into some uneconomic and useless* language like how Omniglot is translated into Ukrainian.
*I say that lightly.
I seem to remember Zompist talking about an upcoming book version beforehand. There's just one thing that piques my curiosity, though:
Zompist: Why'd you pick Kebreni, of all your conlangs, to do a case study of?

Half the board has suffered Kebrenitis at least once - you invent some nifty new idea for use a conlang, and only later (often much later) do you discover Zompist did it in Kebreni long ago. It's always the one that trips people up. Perhaps its selection as a case study will soften that blow for the next generation?

I'm probably going to get a lot of boos for for this, but I don't like the cover.
I think the picture should have at least something to do with languages.
Oh, I understand the logic: it's the Language Construction Kit. It's a machine. You put in a few ideas at one end, and out pops a ready-made language at the other end.
But I still think the emphasis should be on the language.

You imported US DVDs? That's funny because I've imported UK DVDs. UK DVDs of like Harry Potter always have better special features. Also, I don't recall paying any import tax, but I bought them through ebay, so who knows.finlay wrote:Hmm, yes. I've definitely imported US DVDs, but I think it was via amazon.co.uk rather than .com. I've often wondered, if the LCK were a physical object, what it might look like - for example, one of those plastic toolkits with many compartments which you see for sale in DIY stores.Trajan wrote:I'm probably going to get a lot of boos for for this, but I don't like the cover.

US ones can be cheaper, particularly when the exchange rate is low. Anything going one way or the other actually has to be marked with what's inside – I was asked to say what was in a package I sent to america one time and how much it was worth, and also the import tax I think is paid on arrival. You might have to go to the post office to pick it up, sort of thing.Viktor77 wrote:You imported US DVDs? That's funny because I've imported UK DVDs. On ebay you make your own shipping price, it was probably $3-4. They did everything, it came right to my door. And I spoke wrong, the DVD was from Ireland because the back had an Irish Gaelic sticker. Regardless, it came from the British Isles.finlay wrote:US ones can be cheaper, particularly when the exchange rate is low. I didn't take it as a metaphor for the LCK, but for language. Language is full of hundreds of little interlocking gears that turn each other, and some would argue that it consists of little else. That said, I can't claim to be a fan of the cover either. It's visually dull. I'd have gone for something colorful, however vaguely related!
Likewise. It's funny how the cover of most linguistics books tend to be largely abstract, not "depicting" anything in particular (like the covers to the Oxford Linguistics series). Personally I would have gone for something like that rather than a picture of something loosely thematically related.Radius Solis wrote:That said, I can't claim to be a fan of the cover either. I will buy it!
I might even get copies of it for two RL friends of mine who have expressed interest in my conlanging... interests, although they're both a bit more into Lojban/IL-like experiments.

*looks at self*
Otherwise, I also had the same thought about the cover. It looked weird and I thought that there could have been a more "illustrative" way to show the book's content.

I'll buy this, for sure. Just because I'm a patriot.

I'll most certainly be taking a copy of this home soon as I get the money (and of course, it is released. But who know which will come first? :s ) because I find the online one a great resource and have it printed out somewhere around here.... but having a properly bound version would be better, plus additional info~

Fixed? Hell, that's the way I says it. May not be the way I write it, but that's cuz I'm learned man, one who knows his constitution and what the second amendment means. Fixing my spelling. Shit, I bet you grammar nazis are all a bunch of hippie commies. Now you stand right there while I get my gun and take care of this little problem.
