Man, that stereotype is literally about 90% true for the area I live (hint: Texas). Well the Bible thing is like 100% true, the pick-up thing is like 90%. Maaaaaybe 85.
Dude...there's pickups EVERYWHERE in Texas!

I almost never eat it. I don't know how to cook with it and I doubt my family would want it. :|

No it's not all common sense since common sense != knowledge, you can still eat "tasty stuff" and burn fat, you just have to know how.
Oh, there's tons of useful knowledge you can gain about loosing weight and getting in shape and stuff that you can pick up educating yourself, Io. My point is that none of it is neccesary; the basic common sense brand of diet plan [veggies and less stuff that tastes good] is pretty effective; it got me through the first 10 kilo. Sure, hell, educate yourself, info is power and blahblahblah, but don't feel that you need to have a degree or pay some guy who probably doesn't know his stuff [and often people in the healthn'fitness industry don't] to do it; the base common sense version of run like hell and eat bland stuff is good enough to start out with.

And btw, common sense = knowledge: ethnoknowledge, if you will, but still.

Ikea. Families, and young people who get their first own flat. My desk is from Ikea, also my desk chair, my desk lamp, my armchair, my nightstand, my paper bin, all three of my shelves, my eating table plus chairs, the frames of the pictures on my wall, and my night lamp. Also various cooking tools, plastic cups and two coffee mugs. Gille Havre cookies are awesome (unless you eat too many, which always gives me the runs) and I miss them because the next Ikea is ~80 km away and you don't get them anywhere else. The keyboard holder I bought with my desk's table top was a major failure because the table top is – like almost anything Ikea – made of chipboard, so the screws didn't hold.

FWIW, my sister who is a biologist claims that you should simply avoid processed sugar and eat what you are hungry for (and if you are hungry for sweet things, eat fruit). And exercise, obviously.

Exercise regularly. It really does work...

And yet, IIRC, studies consistently prove that people who eat a very small amount of sugar [say, one spoon with your morning coffee] loose weight faster than those that eliminate it completely. Mainly because a little sugar seems to inhibit cortisol, which is a common response to hypocaloric diets. Problem with sugar is that it promotes estrogen, which in turn promotes fat storage. this shit is real complex.

Only if you rest enough and eat enough protein; of course, chances are you rest more than enough and have a very protein-rich diet. But still.

Yeah, I don't even know why I said that right now. I guess I was asking- is anybody on the zbb trying to bulk up rather than slim down? I myself could use a little muscle, being more on the skinny side.

Good gracious, surely you can go to any Chinese food takeaway and buy a dish made with tofu.

I want/need to gain a bit of weight; probably about 4-5 kilograms would be ideal. Muscle preferred, though even fat wouldn't be too bad.

Owned and operated by one of the five Chinese people who somehow drifted into rural Missouri, perhaps?

Yes, and even if for some reason they don’t have tofu, and I would be very surprised if they don’t, you could always ask for a dish made with vegetables. Surely they have vegetables in the depths of rural Missouri. And surely they have a Yellow Pages at wherever it is you live and you could look up "restaurants".

And there is also table-sugar, HFCS, and sugar in fruit, which are all different beasts as well. I'm pretty sure only good things can come of going cold turkey on HFCS.

Actually, Indian is probably a better option as far as vegetarian goes. The point still stands, though, since just about the only place I could eat in Little Rock was a nice Indian restaurant (random aside, I lost ten pounds in ten days because I was visiting family and they wanted to go to places that had no vegetarian options other than maybe a tiny iceberg lettuce salad. That said, the problem isn't the food options in the South and Midwest, as much as that family or friends who aren't vegetarian might not realize the situations they put you in).

An American I've talked to once (herself vegetarian) supposed that probably one reason many Americans are fat is because corn syrup is put into almost everything (thanks to lobbyism) and that it would be turned into fat much more readily than ordinary sugar. That plus notorious lack of exercise.

I eat adult portions of food but I don't get fat even without regular exercise. I don't know why, my body must still absorb sugar and fat very well. Other people my age always complain about how they have to take care of what they eat and do sports for not to gain weight. One thing I've observed however is that when I was in alternative army service I had physical labor more than usual, which increased my appetite but also made me gain a little more muscle. I gained 2 kg during that time and lost them quickly after my 8 months were over.

The HFCS lobby has lashed back at its bad rep recently. They've begun running commercials which go something like:

-"Woah, don't eat that, do you know what's in that!?"
-"You mean high fructose corn syrup?"
-"Yeah..."
-"...And did you realise that it's fine in moderation?"

Yup, I've been trying to gain weight for the past two years.
I added about 8 kilos. I don't think any of it is fat, because I basically have Carsten's metabolism. I used to be 59 kilos at about 6 feet/1.81m, now I think I'm at around 66 kg

Eric: Do those guest students your family are housing actually know you fancy them? :|
Nils: What do you do to gain? Sports? (Since I'm not doing any training I guess I could need some anyway, just for enduringness)

No, I don't fancy them haha. Tjark has a nice body and nice eyes, enough to lust for but no more than a straight host brother and his Swedish exchange student Anika.
