Weird. One of my students is a Tibetan monk, a Rinpoche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinpoche) whose reincarnations have been traced for some ridiculous number of generations and for whom people in Tibet, Nepal and India will travel hundreds of miles just to come and touch his feet, and he personally knows the Dalai Lama - AND HE HAS ONE PINKY NAIL LONGER THAN THE REST! I asked him about it and he says he just likes it and it has no significance ... hmm.

Well, perhaps not so much those two groups.

Luckily for my point, drug use is not mutually exclusive of either organizations. Before you make the point that he's Buddhist, I am aware that they are generally not down for that kind of thing. But a wise man once said, "Just like you, I have my vices".

Or he's not connected at all and he enjoys Chinese tradition that keeps him from looking like a peasant. He could also be insecure about his pinky length, which would keep him from prosperity if it was too short in Chinese palmistry.
