It's not! (I just realized the wine box says "Spanish" lol).

Here, box wine is usually used for cooking. I mean, it can also be drunk, but it's worse than normal wine. Many beggars on the street drink from it.

What, aren't you supposed to cook with a wine that you wouldn't mind drinking? Because you still get the flavor of the wine when you cook with it...?

This is the same rule I've heard generally everywhere: one should use at least a decent wine whenever one cooks, preferably one that you would drink.

Problem is, if you don't drink wine, then this rule is a bit hard to manage. So I go with the rule that one should never buy the cheapest wines and, in my view, Chilean, Italian, and Australian wines are good values. In the UK, I'd spend about £6-7 on a bottle of wine for cooking and had good results; my mother spends anywhere from $9 to $15 here in the US.

Not necessarily, what if it tastes awful with food? Well, the wine they sell in boxes here is made for cooking, which means that it's already a flavor we are supposed to like in food and people keep buying for that. And anyways a good wine can be good to drink but not with a certain meat or food (however, as you have pointed out, this is also complicated because many people who cook with wine don't usually drink it, i.e. my grandma).

cooking wine is sweeter, generally less tanic [here at least] and very strong-tasting if it's red. I'd wager the bitter and the tanins of some better wines make them less suitable for cooking, and the soft tones of the white ones make it a waste to boil.

I would have assumed cooking wine to be cheaper because it's exposed to heat and other methods of cooking and other flavours etc., whereas wine simply for drinking is enjoyed for the taste of the wine alone, no?

In the US, dedicated cooking wine that you find in the grocery store is heavily mixed with salt to render it unpalatable to drink (thus exempting it from many wine taxes). That's mostly why I hear the rule of using a mid-quality wine that one would drink for the purposes of cooking. Of course, you don't want to use a $100-per-bottle wine for your beef burgundy, but a $15 per bottle type strikes the right balance (at least to me).

Somewhat on-topic for the thread:

The LORD intended them to be airplane navigation hazards; either the navigator will act by flying around, or else commit the great sin of inaction and thereby cause great death and suffering, in a reënactment of the story of Pontius the Pilot.

As for cooking wine: just use any mediocre wine. An ideal price would be about 3 EUR a bottle.(US$ 3,76). We get those low prices at cheap discount supermarkets. Oftentimes you'll find 4 or 5 euro wines.

Unless you are planning to drink wine with your food (which is often delicious with wine-containing food, such as mussels with white wine, beef in red wine, etc.). Then put the same wine in your food as the one you will be drinking, unless you are going to be drinking extremely expensive wines that is.
