Threaddrift is a tradition. It's so common, in fact, that we don't have a Threaddrift Day. BTW, wait for drifttalks about Jews, Muslims, racism issues or terrorism: they're as funnier as the sex and religion ones; but the best ones, in my opiniom, are when we
review past historical events and personalities.
You know, I think that, to keep with the metaphor, it should really be called "thread
fray".
(Also, don't we have one about Jews and one about racism right now?)

I've never been able to figure out why people here think thread drift is unique to this forum and not commonplace.

It's not, we just have far less of any sort of taboos against it. Despite some efforts for them *stink eye*

Less than who? I've been on plenty of forums where it is the norm.

And I've been on dozens where any off-topic comment brings a lecture from a mod and frequently some form of black mark.

I'd personally rather there not be thread-drift in these archival NOTA threads. Especially the Quote Thread and such.

Bow. Bow. Is there a negative stigma to necroing on this forum? I get that kind of feeling.

I've actually never been on a forum that didn't have a negative reaction to necroing.

I'm new to forums and I never encountered the word until yesterday. What is the maximum time a thread can be inactive before a new post is considered necromantic?

It's... not really a huge issue... but given that this thread is literally titled "census 2013" I think it's pretty obvious to stay away from it. Don't we have a more recent topic like this?

This one doesn't. In fact, you are expected to search for an appropriate old thread to necromance before you start a new thread! But it is the
only forum I know that entertains that stance on thread necromancy.

There is nothing wrong with reviving old threads here per se. Sometimes someone has something valuable to contribute to an old thread that hasn't seen activity for months or even years. I have done this several times in the past, e.g. in The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread and in European languages before Indo-European.
BUT - this thread is ZBB Census 2013, and that means that contributing to it in 2016 is meaningless.

I've just realised that
this is the more recent topic, and there must have been a Census 2011 thread before this. I even started this topic and wrote that in the opening comment... Oh dear...
