I would just call them 'Zigeuner' in Dutch. However, there is not a very large Romani minority in the Netherlands. I have only seen Romani in Czech, never in Holland. In Belgium however there is a more sizeable minority.

What we do have as a pejorative term is 'kamper' (people who live on a camp). However these are usually not ethnic Romani, but Dutch people who live on a trailer park. Usually these are the lowest of the lowest socially-classed, unemployed Dutch people and they are seen as the drain of the sink if the sink is Dutch society.

Recently a travelling peoples speaking English with a British accent arrived in some parts of the Netherlands offering services aggressively at ridiculous prices. At first nobody knew what these people where, but they turned out to be Irish Travellers who had come from England.

Wrong guess. I was responding to Torco, who said:
I do agree that gitano is not the same word, which I mentioned.
"The same" referring to "gypsy".

The rest of your post is a strawman based on something I didn't say nor claimed.

Whose statement was he agreeing with if not mine?

Regardless, he didn't say what you claim he said any more than I did. "Not the same word" does not mean "not cognate".

You are right, but that was nevertheless how I interpreted it.

Happy thing: I am once again become torco, the goer to gyms. iron has been lifted, sweat has been secreted, muscles have been stressed, and all is well in the world.

I did some leg lifts today. And I'm about to go out and muck about in the garden for a bit. Then I think a soak in the tub with Süsskind.

I did absolutely nothing in terms of sports today, except making a very short sprint from my house to the train station to catch the 6.56 AM train. I live less than 5 minute's walk from the train station.

I can see the trains from my balcony, but sadly I have to walk alllll the way around in order to cross the railway under a bridge and then back onto the station. Otherwise it would be only 2 minutes. What a horrible life do I have.

This is the Happy Things thread, take you complaining elsewhere! Unless of course, your goal was to make us happy .

As for happy things, Thrusday I'll go with my eldest daughter to Outline, a Dutch demo party. It'll be her first demo party, and we're both looking forward to it! The fact that it'll poor for days can't spoil our happy mood :)

Of course that was sarcastic. Not many people can say they live so close to a railway station. And to boot even Intercity trains stop there, and not only local trains (if there were only local trains I would use the station much less I think). And as I do not own a fat audi or any car unlike some here I am dependant on the train to get anywhere.

I could never lead this life style if I had lived in America or other countries with very poor public transport.

I can't anymore, though I've lived a few years next to one.

What fun. You live in Amersfoort right? I was close to Amersfoort a short while ago (Nijkerk) and passed through it. It doesn't strike me as a very interesting city though.

Yeah. I lived near the Amersfoort Schothorst station. If you went by train coming from Nijkerk, you should at least have seen the beautiful Koppelpoort, which is close to Amersfoort's main station. Also visible from the train should be the Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren, which imho is better looking tham the Utrecht Dom. There's many more interesting old buildings and churches in the centre of Amersfoort, so if you're at all interested in old architecture, it's definitely worth a visit.

The koppelpoort does look spectacular.

However I'm used to Leiden which is also a beautiful historical city.

Spent half an hour walking around outside for a photoshoot at work. I actually feel pretty good now.

Since I can't actually seize each of you by the ear and bang your heads together, I'll simply lock this thread if I have to. Nobody else wants to see your petty bickering.

A SIMPLE TWO-STEP PROCEDURE FOR MAINTAINING HARMONY ON THE ZBB
1. If you think someone it trolling (or being abusive or otherwise acting like a dick), REPORT IT.
2. If you think their behaviour is obnoxious but doesn't actually violate any board rules, IGNORE IT.

Any questions?

Where did my venting thread go, by the way? Mods, we've been over this before: please pm me if you delete any post, as it's very annoying.

Eating homemade Chicken Kung Pao right now, the version with sichuan pepper in it and which is not sweet. What an odd sensation, I never used schuan pepper before.
