What was this with reference to?

I'd like to suggest a rule for this thread whereby we have to link to the post we're quoting, so that anyone who wants to can read it in context. We don't necessarily need to have the page come up with the post in question at the top, because that can be hard to do, but at least the right page in the right thread. Here's the code for such linkage within a quote tag:

Code: Select all

[quote="[url=http://www.spinnoff.com/zbb/viewtopic.php?t=12561]?ge Kruger[/url]"]This is [i]avant garde[/i] crap.[/quote]

Yours, Tim.
The only problem with this is that some of the quotes come from Ephemera topics that may be pruned, resulting in broken links.

At least we'll be able to find the context for a few days afterwards ? which, let's face it, is when most of us are going to want to. And it's better than there being no links at all. But yes, thanks for pointing that out ? it hadn't occurred to me.

...Which is why one should link only to L&L posts, and maybe C&C/NotA ones. Definitely the first kind, though.

Edit: Also, I suggest doing what I do and giving a bit of context in the "[someone] wrote" thing:

[quote="In the Ephemera thread entitled "X" started by Y, Z"]blah[/quote]

if an ephemera page has a great quote we shoudl immediately save the page and upload it to our own website and link to that. :mrgreen:

Or just quote what was said, along with some context. E.g.:

Conlanging isn't the creative study of language, it's the study of language to creatively imitate it.

Does using that phrase give you 'kicks', my dear Khang? You seem to be addicted to it.
So take this body at sunset to the great stream whose pulses start in the blue hills, and let these ashes drift from the Long Bridge where only a late gull breaks that deep and populous grave.

Now here's the real question:

If Daoist Phonology was available as a degree program, would Linguoboy have signed up?
