No shots of anyone sporting burberry hats there?
But anyways, Viktor is the sort to forget that not everyone (i.e. the vast majority of people) has babysitters or nannies on-call at all times and that sometimes people eat at restaurants just because they are somewhere away from home and hence obviously do not have a kitchen available to them (and maybe they might just not want to eat at McDonald's then). Conversely, Viktor, oddly enough, also doesn't realize that prices like these are certainly not "upscale" in the first place, despite that I would expect him to say just that about them...

Does anybody have a PDF of Amanda McKittrick Ros's work? I can't find it.

Re: Seahorses, I Love 'Em (& other Links of Interest)
Missed the restaurant issue the first time around.
In most places there are billions of family restaurants where children are welcome whatever their noise level. So it's not unfair that people who want a more peaceful environment when eating out should have options for it, and if families with noise-prone children take them to the latter sort anyway, they are being inconsiderate in precisely the same way a smoker is being inconsiderate when lighting up without asking in a roomful of nonsmokers. Noise pollution is not a less legitimate concern than air pollution and for some people causes serious health issues. Nobody expects people to have hot and cold babysitters on tap, but save trips to the quiet restaurants for the times when you can get one. It's just common decency. But conversely, people who want a quiet dinner do not get to complain when they go to a family restaurant instead and there's a lot of noise.

A website that claims to identify the dialect of English you speak. It keeps saying I have a Southern accent, for what it's worth.

It couldn't recognize my accent, either because my microphone sucks, or more likely because it's an amalgamation based off posh BrE, with some AmE thrown in, and then just anything I came across gets thrown in.Eddy wrote:A website that claims to identify the dialect of English you speak. Also, interesting choice of text.
Hint: The things you say are: 'Never', 'going to', 'give' and 'you up'.
Edit: Fixed italics.

Yeah, that seemed like an odd choice to me since it doesn't really focus on the words that differ most notably between dialects. It would make more sense to analyze how you pronounce "bike" ([baIk], [b@ik], or [ba:k]) and so forth.

Here's a bit of internet culture, Eddy:
The song Never Gonna Give You Up is part of an (old) internet meme called Rickrolling, where you post a link to interesting stuff, but it actually goes to the aforementioned song, or other ones.

It said I have a Southern accent, even though I am regularly accused by real people of talking like a Canadian.

Yeah, it gave me a southern accent too. I guess it's just a highly technical and well pulled off rickroll.Risla wrote:It said I have a Southern accent, even though I am regularly accused by real people of talking like a Canadian.

I did it and it told me I have a "Northern United States Accent". Then I did it faking an English accent and it said "Northern United States Accent". I'm starting to suspect all it does is locate your IP address...

One of the scariest insects ever. I had no idea it was possible to feel sorry for bees.

Nothing like a good old-fashioned bee dogpile to show a hornet who's boss.
In every U.S. presidential election between 1976 and 2004, the Republican nominee for president or for vice president was either a Dole or a Bush.
