ZBB member photos, part 5. (Something for the weekend, sir?)

Discussions worth keeping around later.

I'm rather pale, too. Especially when I was younger relatives would sometimes ask whether I wouldn't feel well... When I'm glad I get a little tan in summer, it's basically what other people look like during the rest of the year.

Ok, that makes sense to me. They're different meanings of the word wrong.

I know "You're wrong" as it usually means in English is "Olet väärässä", but can I also say "Olet väärä" meaning 'You're the wrong choice' and "Olet väärin" meaning "There's something wrong with you." Maybe unidiomatic, but is that what they seem like to you?
Yes, exactly. Those last two ones are quite unidiomatic, and would be really rude if you said that to someone. :D

I guess the first sentence could be used, but then has the meaning "the music is beautiful", for example as in "the stage performance sucked, but the music is beautiful" when referring to some show.
So what would it be when you're talking about music in general (ie. "music"), not specific music (ie. "the music")?? Musiikki on kaunista?
Yes, correct again.

Well, I may have gotten that one phrase wrong, but I didn't use Google Translate for it. I was just not paying attention to the words I was using.

I've been trying to learn some Finnish because I have a friend in Helsinki.

You seen Close Encounters Of The Third Kind?
Finns have analog synthesizers too, you know. They're called accordions. A 12 cl jalovina with a burp marks line break.
"Baaarf", means full stop.

I just thought it was funny that you said 'That's so wrong' and then proceeded to "correct" it to a phrase that would be, I assume, much harder for a Finn to understand than the original was.

Onnea!! For future reference, when you're translating "that", the demonstratives are tuo and se (things that you do and don't point at, respectively, as far as I know). The complementizer "that" (the subordinating conjunction meaning "the fact/idea that ...") is että, or et in informal speech.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tuo#Finnish
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/se#Finnish
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ett%C3%A4#Finnish

Eg. Tuo mies tietää, että se on väärin. = "That man (over there) knows that that is wrong."
Glossing Abbreviations: COMP = comparative, C = complementiser, ACS / ICS = accessible / inaccessible, GDV = gerundive, SPEC / NSPC = specific / non-specific

Suomi is outo. (Or is that "outoa"? I don't even know anymore.)

Why is it "Musiikki on kaunista" instead of "kaunis"?

For that matter, why is "onni" in the partitive?

I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke

This is me, with short hair again. I'm not really sure I like the cut I got, it doesn't seem as well done as the last time (though I like it being this short) (and yes, I realize the picture's nearly the same as the last one I posted, but that's because this is where I sit, and just coincidentally I'm wearing pretty much the same clothes).

It's a gradual process. I haven't been ID'd at least with any regularity since I was about 21.

What, the irony of getting the grammar wrong and telling us that you are 13 now?

Ossicone: maybe... remember, we all think you look younger than you are, so that might not be a good sign. I've never really had to ID people, so I don't know what I'd do with you. Probably err on the side of caution, I'm afraid. But IRL you might look your actual age. The guideline here is that if you look under 21 you should expect to get ID'd, but a lot of places, like supermarkets, have put that up to 25.

If you have a wispy beard that only shows up round your chin, by the way, you'll still get ID'd, because only teenagers tend to have beards like that. I think the fact that I do get full stubble (although it's not dark like most people's and is invisible for the first day or two), and the fact that I have chest hair, contributes to me not getting ID'd anymore.
