I used to think I looked silly in pictures, but I think I've kind of gotten over that now. I still don't trust my general ability to take pictures, though, because I have a long history of not holding the camera very well and I'm always confused about what exactly people expect to see in the resulting picture. It's not very often that people take pictures of me. Unless there's a security camera or something somewhere that I'm not really aware of. :P

How about a recent-ish photo of me in Slovenia. (Taken less than a month ago!)

Lake Bled I assume? At first I thought you've cut your hair but I was wrong, I kind wish I could grow a long hair again but I'm too impatient for that, there's the period between short and long hair when it's just a mess and I look retarded and I always end up cutting it, the longest I could last was 5-6 months.

Nice selfie by the way.

I don't really post in this thread, but this might be worth it. Here's me a week and a half ago in my doctoral regalia.

gach: Congrats! And the sword looks quite stabulous. In contrast, in the US, we only get funny-looking robes and hoods. Don't know if we even get those in Luxembourg...

Yep, 'tis Bled. And thanks. But, yeah, I just tie my hair back, especially when I'm travelling. Have been thinking of doing a hair donation, though (I've been growing my hair out for about 7 years now), but we'll see. Though my hair being straight is nice-ish when growing it out, as it really doesn't get too unruly or unmanageable. (I think.)

The sword is a nice thing. Too bad that you don't actually get it but rather have to buy, rent, or loan from somewhere. Unless, of course, your friends get the idea and give it to you as a gift. :-D Mine's still in Finland since it didn't fit in my suitcase but I'm definitely going to hang it on a wall at some point.

The traditions for academic regalia vary a lot even within countries and from faculty to faculty. I talked to one theologian at our conferment dinner who was pretty annoyed that they only get a Bible instead of the sword. Also doctors of music and doctors of science from technical universities get fabric insignias instead of the sword. And instead of the hat, masters get a laurel wreath. You have to do the research for your own faculty to know what their traditions are, but I don't think I've ever seen doctoral swords from anywhere except Nordic universities.

Heck, even the traditions for when you organise the graduation ceremonies vary a lot. In Finland the grand conferment ceremonies typically only take place at most every three years or so, but when they happen we do them properly as elaborate multi day celebrations. The common mundane graduation ceremonies, that happen a couple of times per year, simply consist of a vice dean handing you your diploma with a glass of sparkling afterwards and no elaborate dresses or parties.

That's very much the whole point. What good is a ceremony if it's indistinguishable from everyday life?

Oh, I know. It's just that the equivalent American gown looks so silly to me by comparison I wouldn't really associate it with anything else.

Nah, links to FB photos seem to be temporary these days??

Was at a party on the weekend and was accused of being, let's say, excited... no, bruh, not in the slightest. Realised in photos later what was going on and realised why my ex bought me those shorts ...

Somehow I can't imagine anyone else in that picture who isn't an actual president.
