Welp. My current manager gave me a counteroffer; he would see if he could break me out of my contract with my contracting firm and he would give me a open spot on GE's next generation product's team, and he would offer me the same or better than how much I am being offered already. I told him that I would go for it if he got me an employment contract in writing by Thursday next week (as Friday would be my last day otherwise).

You're the subject of a bidding war. Relish the feeling!

Does GE mean General Electric?

To update on my girlfriend issues, I left her earlier, citing the fact that I consider it a matter of principle to not hitting children.

Well, so much for that. My contracting firm is not willing to let me out of my contract, regardless of what my manager's manager was offering them in return. My manager told me that, in 18 months, the time limit after which I am actually free of my contract, if I'm not happy with where I am working then, he would be happy to find me a job back here as a permanent employee.

And yes, I do work at GE, up until next Friday.

I have mixed feelings about the other guitarist in my band. I'm happy to have a second guitar, but... I don't think he's very good. I'm not speaking about technique: heck, I have limited technical abilities myself.

The guy is by no means a beginner: he's in his forties, and owns about thirty guitars. He doesn't like taking solos, so we have to cajole him into doing them, whenever a song needs him to play a solo. I asked him, repeatedly, to learn the main riff for two songs, so that I can play basic chords while singing: he never bothered. Fine, then, let him be a dedicated rhythm player. Which means being reliable: always playing on time, always keeping up the song structure. And yet, all too often, he changes chords at the wrong time, or fails to get into the chorus.

So, yeah: I'm happy to have him in the band, but I'm not sure he pulls his weight.

That's a shame... still, at least you have somewhere good to go.

My parents' divorce has been finalized... coincidentally (perhaps) just under three years to the day my father left my mother. In some ways, I'm relieved that it's done and over with, but it's still not pleasant. (Now to figure out how to manage trips back to the US when they're about 1200 miles apart.)

So will I, and mostly in Edinburgh. Do you have definite dates yet? Will you be in Edinburgh much?

@Finlay: I'll probably be mostly in Edinburgh as well, and travelling a bit to the Highlands and Islands as well. We could maybe meet up sometime.

Ripe pun indeed. I assume, given the context, that is an ellipsis for 'we can have a Réunion', rather than an imperative. We can decide on the exact date via PM nearer the time, can't we?

Verily, it eggs-cruciates.

Meanwhile, after four weeks of two half-days, I have to stop work again.

Oh What's up with your work?

You don't happen to be in Edinburgh this summer yourself, do you?

Briefly: I was diagnosed with ME/CFS 21 months ago and have been off work more or less continuously since. I've been back a few times this month, but it has turned out to be too much too soon.

I'm unlikely to be anywhere else; I do live here after all :-)

Desk-bound software engineering. Arguably this belongs in the venting thread.

Perhaps, although I wouldn't be able to stay long.

Bad thing: I'm still puking. I've discovered that I can keep down bread okay though.

Good thing: Despite the vomiting, I climbed a goddamn mountain today. Benefits of being really stubborn, I guess.

I crashed a bicycle rather badly on Sunday. Don't know exactly what happened since it was very sudden (although I have some ideas…), but I went over the handlebars and hit the ground face-first going roughly 30kph. I broke three teeth, fractured my sternum (just a tiny bit), and got a whole bunch of nasty bruises and scrapes, especially on my face and my right hand.

I am posting this here rather than in the venting thread for several reasons:
1) it could have been MUCH worse than it was. I could easily have hit my head, and I don't know how much the helmet would have helped with that. Also, if I'd hit my chest any harder than I did, I could have damaged my heart or lungs. Also also, the bike (not my own bike) was completely fine—not a single scratch, for which I am very grateful.
2) I found a dentist's office quite close to where I live which provided me with the best dental care I have ever received. They fixed my teeth yesterday in less than an hour and a half, you can't even see where they were broken (!!!), and the bill came out to ¥5,000. I've been procrastinating on finding a dentist since it's a scary thing in a foreign country and a foreign language, but now my fears are thoroughly assuaged.
3) I am healing remarkably fast. My face no longer looke like I smashed it at high speed into the pavement a bit more than two days ago. Even my chest (where I fractured my sternum) no longer hurts, and I'm now expecting to be close to 100% recovered within the next week or so.
4) I've handled this whole situation really well, to the point that how well I've handled it makes me like myself more—it's nice to see myself handle a bad situation gracefully, with patience and cheerfulness.
