For reference, these are German dogs. As such, the word "dachshund" ("badger hound") is not pronounced (in CXS) [d&S@nd] but rather (forgive me if i screw this up, I don't speak German) [daxshUnd_0]. Thank you in advance for not being a typical English speaker and screwing this up terribly, like most other foreign words that you assume are not loanwords.

Maybe your country has too many predators that don't allow birds to lose there flight and become oversized.

Facts about Takahe:

Only between 200-300 left in the world.
Endemic to New Zealand.
Largest rail in the world.
Thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered in 1940s.
They eat grass.
Have only 1 or 2 chicks a year.
They get killed by cats and stoats.
Oh and they are really awesome birds.

Close - it's [dakshUnt]... 'chs' is pronounced /ks/ unless it's a <ch> and an <s> that have just been put next to each other. And the <d> is pronounced as /t/ because it is devoiced at the end of a syllable.

This is the best thing ever!! - It's a Tarsier.

Those baby tarsiers are indeed the cutest things ever.

Although the adults are rather weird looking - still cool though.

Although not as odd as the ones with the really long spindly middle finger - aye-ayes.

This is a baby aye-aye. It is not a special effect from a cheap horror movie, despite apearances.

Here he is again

He was born a week or too ago in London Zoo.

Here you can see the long and thin finger on a different aye-aye

and here Image

These tarsier pictures have given me ideas for the evolution of my conpeople. Tree dwelling ancestors that do not look like monkeys! It gives them big eyes and weird skinny fingers, just like I wanted. Awesome!

They're not gross. The baby is cute in a Peter Jackson zombie movie rat-monkey kind of way.

And as for the finger, are you telling me you've never used your finger for fishing things out of your ear or nose? That's grosser :P

Ants and grubs are nutritious....

PS: Imralu, I want to thank you for the tarsier pics. They gave me inspiration for my conrace - they are going to be descended from nocyrnal tarsier like creatures. Big ginormous eyes are go!
