Re: Polyglottal Telephone 17 [REQUIRED: Swedish translation]
Esmelthien sent the text to me this afternoon, and I've translated it back into English now. It's weird indeed...
Anyway: Team A has reached the finish line!

I propose we mob the renitent team B members until the same is true for us. I want to see how badly I screwed up, dammit.

Serafin isn't opening his PMs now. He's had over a week. Does anyone want to take his place?

I'd do it, but I can only do into Latin. I forgot all of the little Mandarin I ever knew xP.
So, yeah, basically, should this need to be partitioned I can do the second half.

Yes! For once my team won!

Can we add a rule about having a reliable posting history to be able to participate, for the next round? Emma hasn't logged on since March 10th, her last post was her signing up for this back in January, and her post before that was in May 2012...so I'm not too surprised we're waiting on her, tbh...

I can help. I know a guy who is incredibly good at Latin. Problem is, he goes to my school and I can't find him on Facebook.Chibi wrote:Can we add a rule about having a reliable posting history to be able to participate, for the next round? Finlay could just post my translation into English too.
Though ideally we would find somebody in this forum willing to do the Latin > English thing...

Re: Polyglottal Telephone 17 [done]
Yes, the head is indeed an idiosyncrasy of Gaelic. "Ceann" can quite literally mean anything that is at any end of anything, from the actual head of a person to the head of an operation (the boss) to any end of a stick or, in this case, a sentence. As the text was incoherent and seemed to involve various actual body parts, I went with κεφαλή, "head (body part)". I also managed to make it into a masculine noun somehow, so, yeah.
As for the Isaac -> Joseph thing, well, both names are the same in Gaelic (for some reason).
As for the final English translation, I simply literally translated what the Latin text said, which is why the English sucks.

That's one of the problems with this game - in professional translation, you'd never do that except under very restricted circumstances. Once you get to the latter stages of word salad, it is of course excusable, but like pronoun concord between words like "everyone" isn't word salad, it's something people should be able to spot. I remember stepping in to do the final step of the conlang version of this a couple of years ago, and the organiser said i'd basically produced something that made much more sense than its predecessor because i'd tried to translate it fluently rather than word by word.
One of the worst tbh was when Astraios translated out of Lakota and left in quite a lot of idiosyncracies of the language, like evidentiality, which is perhaps necessary in their language but requires several extra words in English. It was particularly disingenuous because he first corrected the Lakota he'd been sent, which didn't include that stuff but maybe wasn't correct Lakota.

Oh. I thought the final English text was meant to display all of the stuff that happened. Maybe add that to the rules next time.finlay wrote:That's one of the problems with this game - in professional translation, you'd never do that except under very restricted circumstances. Already the original text was difficult to understand. :/
Aeetlcreejl's translation
Now I understand why the word order was so weird already in the beginning. Finlay: Pronouns are gender neutral in Finnish, so he only made the Weaver a human, not necessarily male.

Gah! *headdesk* I do know 思.but there's at least one place where Qwynegold uses the wrong kanji with a homophonous word, which turns "heavy fashion" into "thought fashion" in Yiuel's translation
lola question was asked to come and soil herself
Even more lol. This is turning into a recipe of chicken wok or something. The textile worker threw a piece of his bloody ear to the floor.
The blood looked like viscous oil, and dripped from his slow-moving hands to the dust on the floor below. The freshly chopped chicken fell down piece by piece in the exact form of a pair of scissors. The tailor lifted his head up and saw a suffering, but moving corpse that had no burdens and that breathed a sigh of relief.
It was as scary as it was delicious---when his whispers ended, he disappeared.

My mistake: 肌肉 (generic muscle/flesh/meat) and 雞肉 (chicken meat) are both pronounced jīròu.

Oh, finally! I'm glad I didn't mess up, apparently.
But I agree with Qwynegold that the original text was (too) hard; as a non-native speaker it doesn't make much sense unless I really go through the effort of looking up words and stuff. I think it's usually funnier in the end when you end up with a mess from something initially pretty comprehensible.

Attention, je pelote !
