Polyglottal Telephone XI

Post by finlay »

PGTXI is finished. Well done everyone!

The time is upon us! The 11th polyglottal telephone is about to begin. But first, I've compiled the still-provisional list of people and the order.

The rules: (if I've missed any, tell me)
• You have three (3) days to complete the translation – this is to keep it going. I've made two exceptions; the first one is four days from now, and those who get it around Christmas will also get 4 days. (Your deadline won't actually change, by the way, so if one person finishes early the next person gets an extra day)
• Deadline is until 23:59 UTC on that day, unless you're dying or something.
• Unless you are translating to or from English, you should also provide an English translations, so that those monoglots among us can keep up with the action.
• When you have translated, PM your new translation to the person next in line and to me, and your extra English translation, if you have made one, just to me. Do not post translations in this thread.
• You have today to raise any objections, otherwise I'll start. If anyone has a problem, speak up (although bear in mind that it might be difficult to fit you in somewhere else unless you can see someone else with the same languages as you).
• There will be two teams, numbered (or, well, lettered) A and B. Team A has one more person than team B.
• It might be worth following this thread so that you can keep up with any news.
• Anyone who wishes to translate into another language that we didn't get a chance to use (eg, eodrakken was the only one to offer Klingon, Astraios was the only one to offer Hebrew, and Skomakar'n was the only one to offer Icelandic and Faroese) is welcome to.
• I'll compile it on the kneequickie at the end.
• Have fun!

Team A:
16 Dec: Åge Kruger – English → Norwegian
19 Dec: Ulrike Meinhof - Norwegian → French
22 Dec: eodrakken - French → English
26 Dec: rickardspaghetti - English → Lakota
30 Dec: Astraios - Lakota → French
3 Jan: Viktor77 - French → Spanish
6 Jan: Zoris - Spanish → English
9 Jan: Skomakar'n - English → Danish
12 Jan: Colz - Danish → English
15 Jan: Aeetlrcreejl - English → Latin
18 Jan: faiuwle - Latin → Spanish
21 Jan: qiihoskeh - Spanish → English
finished

Team B:
16 Dec: Qwynegold - English → Japanese
19 Dec: FSI - Japanese → Romanian
22 Dec: Risla Amahendir - Romanian → Spanish
26 Dec: candrodor - Spanish → German
30 Dec: jmcd - German → French
3 Jan: Ran - French → Chinese
6 Jan: Cockroach - Chinese → English
9 Jan: Lukas Kelly - English → Spanish
15 Jan: YngNghymru - Spanish → French
18 Jan: Gulliver - French → German
21 Jan: cedh audmanh - German → English
finished

Awesome! :) Norwegian to French, I'm looking forward to it!

Am I understanding everything correctly, are the dates you've given the deadlines for the translation after the colon? Not the deadline for the translation on the line above? So my deadline is 19 Dec?

What happens if someone misses a deadline? Does everyone else's get pushed up? Do we just give the untranslated text to the next person and hope they can lump along?

Hmm, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, i reckon... For the moment, I'm just worried that Åge and Qwynegold won't have got the message that they're to go first, but I'll send them the text and cross my fingers. They can always have an extra day if need be, and I can push some other deadline back... and I'm sure if they aren't responding someone else will be able to translate something into Norwegian and Japanese... Just make sure you all check this on a semi-regular basis just in case, y'know? 8)

Do you reckon I should PM everyone now or anything? :?

I have received the text, and will be making a stabbing motion at it this evening.

Just to clarify, your deadline is still 19th of December even though Åge has finished early... but of course you are welcome to finish it early too. ;) (This is partly because there's a guy in your team who couldn't do December, so I can't keep pushing everyone's deadlines back...)

Of course you'd have to have two people offering to do Catalan :P

(Risla offered to do out of any Romance language, so as long as we have a brave person like her, you might be in luck)

On the subject of the Next Time, let's not make it more than a year, right guys? ;)

No, not really. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, there's someone, I think Colz, who can't do it until January anyway. So if you want to take up until the 30th of December, even if rickard finishes his tomorrow, you're welcome to. I'd take my time with the translation if I were you...

Oh don't worry, I wasn't racing, that was just how long it took me. The text isn't very long and there were only a couple of things I didn't understand on the first read-through. (Um, I hope. I guess I'll find out at the end.)

Fair enough. Maybe I'm just not a particularly good judge of how long it'll take people. I just tried to make it about the same length as previous years' texts have been.
