Polyglottal Telephone XI

Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I'm not sending you it until you spell my name correctly.
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I haven't finished it yet, anyway, because I got very confused about something in Rickard's translation.
EDIT: Besides, unless the other team have been sneaking theirs through the gates without telling us in this thread, we're miles ahead of them.

But, they could catch up easily. We might get several users who take several days apiece.Astraios wrote:I haven't finished it yet, anyway, because I got very confused about something in Rickard's translation.

Sorry, I don't speak Redneck. Anyway, I forgot to do any translating yesterday. But I finished it just now and sent it to FSI.Åge Kruger wrote:Where you at homes? You gonna get yo team into hella trubbs.Qwynegold wrote:I've received it too, and will start translating later today.

There's someone out there that doesn't recognize "hella" as stereotypically SoCal?

Someone who is neither a native English speaker nor knows enough about English dialects to confidently pinpoint what "SoCal" refers to, perhaps.faiuwle wrote:There's someone out there that doesn't recognize "hella" as stereotypically SoCal?

Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I think the time you allowed is fine. I'm sure not everyone will be able to get to it right away, and it's probably better to allow too much time than not enough.finlay wrote:Fair enough. Maybe I'm just not a particularly good judge of how long it'll take people. I just tried to make it about the same length as previous years' texts have been.
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
It's not. Chill. (Astraios is perfectly within limits to take until the end of December if he pleases. Again I'll point out that we have one user in your team who can't do it until the end of December/beginning of January anyway, so I'd actually prefer it if someone decides to drag out your team for a while.)Viktor77 wrote:Astraios this is a race!Astraios wrote:I'm not sending you it until you spell my name correctly.
We only ever decided to put it into teams (years ago, I mean) because otherwise there'd be 20 people and it can drag on for months.
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I'm a native speaker, and I know full well what SoCal is, but I didn't know that about "hella". I thought it was just an Americanism.Ulrike Meinhof wrote:Someone who is neither a native English speaker nor knows enough about English dialects to confidently pinpoint what "SoCal" refers to, perhaps.faiuwle wrote:There's someone out there that doesn't recognize "hella" as stereotypically SoCal?
And I'm just about ready to send the text, but I can keep Viktor in suspense for a few more days if you think I should.
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
So wait, if our team is ahead of schedule, does that mean the deadline changes to 3 days from whenever you receive it, or is always going to be according to the schedule finlay posted?
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I know, sorry. It's just that about 99% of the time I hear someone is talking about "hella" they're either making fun of or complaining about Californians, so it's kind of funny when someone doesn't recognize it.Ulrike Meinhof wrote:Someone who is neither a native English speaker nor knows enough about English dialects to confidently pinpoint what "SoCal" refers to, perhaps.
Carry on.

Received the text from FSI, but I won't be able to translate it for a couple days because I really need to finish this essay first.

That's funny, he never sent it to me. FSI!!Risla Amahendir wrote:Received the text from FSI, but I won't be able to translate it for a couple days because I really need to finish this essay first.
(And of course, that's fine, your deadline is the 22nd anyway - I've not been putting them forward)

Can those who are finished see the original text?

Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
Question! How do I translate? Do I translate literally even if it makes no sense (only grammatical sense but no contextual sense). Or do I attempt to make perfect contextual sense out of even it means altering something?

No... let's keep that until it's all done! It would be a shame to spoil it.rickardspaghetti wrote:Can those who are finished see the original text?

Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
Done; that was fast. Sending it to Sko shortly.
Re: Polyglottal Telephone XI
I translated what it actually said, not what I thought it should say (or probably did say in the original text). I think that was what most people did last time.Viktor77 wrote:Question!
