Teléfono políglota XII (Polyglottal Telephone XII)

Post by Ser »

¡Muy bien! Here I'm going to organize the twelfth iteration of the Polyglottal Telephone.

(EDIT: RESULTS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE)

The rules (taken from finlay's post but slightly altered):
The rules: (if I've missed any, tell me)
• You have three (3) days to complete the translation – this is to keep it going.
• I don't think there's much use in deadlines, so I won't be using that.
• Unless you are translating to or from English, you should also provide an English translations, so that those monoglots among us can keep up with the action.
• When you have translated, PM your new translation to the person next in line and to me, and your extra English translation, if you have made one, just to me. Do not post translations in this thread.
• There will be two teams, numbered (or, well, lettered) A and B.
• Anyone who wishes to translate into another language that we didn't get a chance to use because there wasn't anybody to pair the user to, be welcome to speak up and I might find a place to fit you in.
• I'll compile it on the kneequickie at the end.
• Have fun!

For now, let's post what languages we're offering and I'll create the chain soon. Myself I'm going from and into Spanish, English, French or Written Arabic.

I can do English-Spanish and Spanish-English, but I'd rather translate the Spanish to English because I'm afraid I'd make a mistake in translating it into Spanish.

When will it start? Preferably I don't do anything before February.

I'll just copy mine from last time. Unless you're willing to run the risk of a lower quality translation?

I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke
What kind of cookie?

to/from English, French, Latin and also from German

BTW, Ren, if you do a translation you basically have to do the first one. Just a fair warning. :P

PS: ideally French→Latin I think would be my preference, but do what you have to to fit me in the chain.

I guess I could try again

French, Japanese, and Chinese (I hope my Chinese wasn't too horrible last time; It's the weakest of the three by far ^^")

Also, I don't know if this was covered or not, but I'm not skilled enough in any of them to be able to directly mentally translate from one to the other. Any translation between two of them that I would do would have to have English as an intermediary. as long as everyone's cool with that...

Doesn't really matter, especially since you're meant to provide an english translation anyway.

Both ways: english, german, french, spanish.

Probably a bad idea, but is anyone up for having a go at Medieval French with me? Might be tricky with the wrong original text though.

If anyone's daring to translate out of Latvian I'll translate into it.

If not I definitely want to participate and will do French-Spanish or Spanish-French (though I'm stronger in the former) and anything involving English-French or Spanish.

Okay, this time around I will translate out of any Romance language EXCEPT ROMANIAN or Moldovan because that's basically Romanian. Also willing to translate out of Russian.

Willing to translate into Spanish or English.

My plan is foolproof!

From: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, English, French, and throw in Occitan too for the hell of it
To: Swedish, English, French

A suggestion: Could we have a text this time that doesn't have any proper names in it? I think that increases the potential for hilarious screw-ups.

Also make sure it's very obscure. We don't want people attempting to Google it to check out strange constructions or God forbid, recognise the text at all.

I actually remember reading a paragraph in a book that I have, in which the author deliberately obscured most of the characters names and simply referred to everyone as "he" most of the time, and thinking, "this would probably be hell for a PT..."

If you don't already have a text, I have an idea for one. Should I PM you with it?

To: English, Spanish

I'm such a boring person :P But I would like to participate anyway.

EDIT: Oh, and I MIGHT be able to translate from Lakota, if you want to risk me screwing things up. :P

SLOW REACTION EDIT: I suppose that if I MIGHT be able to translate from Lakota, then I'd PROBABLY be able to translate from French too.

I'd be interested. I can do:
From: English, Spanish, and German, and I could probably figure out Dutch, Frisian, Portuguese or French.
To: Also English, Spanish, and German, as well as Latin and Anglo-Saxon.
