The Adventure of English

Post by MosMus »

I thoroughly enjoyed this 8 part documentary regarding the history of the English language. It was aired on BBC, and I'm sure given we are all language enthusiasts here many of us have seen it. I especially liked the person who read the Old English texts - had a great voice. Anyways, here's a link to it, enjoy!

This documentary gives me a few ideas on conhistories and duplets of words in a conlang.

Oh, I remember that! It was good. The book that accompanies it is worth reading, as well. It's not deep, but it is broad and covers a lot of topics. Melvin Bragg is a very enjoyable writer.

*plays the Roman soldier from Life of Brian*

Nom. der Film
Gen. des Films
Dat. dem Film
Acc. den Film

"nach" requires the dative. "Dem" only works if you stress it, otherwise it must be "diesem".

werden:

ich werde
du wirst
er wird
wir werden
ihr werdet
sie werden

Since the PP adverbial "Nach dem Film" is the First Thing indeed the verb must come after it, so you get subject-verb inversion: "wirst du". "zu + Inf." is only used in infinitive clauses.

Throw in an "unbedingt" before the verb to indicate the burning desire.

Now go and write "Nach dem Film wirst du unbedingt Deutsch sprechen wollen" 1000 times.
