Polyglottal Telephone XV

Post by Lyhoko Leaci »

And just like that, round 15 of the Polyglottal Telephone pops up! Hopefully this one won't bog down in parts like the last two did. It should be shorter, though...

The rules (Some mutant hybrid of the rules from 13 and 14... If I've missed any, tell me.):
• You have three (3) days to complete the translation – this is to keep it going.
Unless you are translating to or from English, you must also provide an English translations, (Even if you should find yourself translating from something like Swedish to Norwegian) so that those monoglots among us can keep up with the action.
When you have translated, PM your new translation to the person next in line and to me, and your extra English translation, if you have made one, just to me.
• Do not post translations in this thread, and try not to spoil anything.
• There will be two teams, named with whatever I happen to think up at the time after quarks, for some reason.
• Check this thread to keep up with any news.
• Anyone who wishes to translate into another language that we didn't get a chance to use because there wasn't anybody to pair the user to, be welcome to speak up and I might find a place to fit you in.
• I'll compile it on the kneequickie at the end.
• Have fun!

The plan is this time to have just a two sentence text, to hopefully speed it up a bit, and as a change from the overly long previous PGT.

I have two ideas for a text already, but you are welcome to suggest something to me to see if I like it better, though. You're also welcome to vote if you want the person related "Huh?" moment, or the object related "Huh?" moment, to influence which currently secret text to translated is chosen. Both have names to mangle, both are two sentences, and both are under 100 words.

Now, just post what languages you're offering to translate into and out of (and if you offer "any Romance language" make sure you're okay with Romanian. :P ... or Mozarabic if I'm feeling sadistic and if someone offers it. Or not. I probably won't torture you on purpose.) You can also offer to translate into or out of conlangs as well if you really want to, as long as there is documentation available. (Or you provide it...)

I'll probably just do English to German.

To and from: Hebrew, Lakota, Maltese, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan (the last four being my abbreviated version of "any Romance language").

(NOT offering French this time, I'm in a mood with it.)

(And I suppose I can always offer English if I must, but I'd rather not.)

My languages are pretty much the same as Astraios's, minus the fancy exotic ones. :)

From: Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, Latin, German (not Romanian, but probably Old Spanish, Old French, etc.)
To: Spanish, French, Portuguese, Hebrew

I could do out of Hebrew if it were really necessary, but I'm not that comfortable with it. And, I might be able to muddle through a translation into Italian or Catalan.

Just going for the conservative option of not offering any weird languages. That said, I could probably muster a translation out of Dutch (might even be quite fun, although I only have a very basic command of the language), or possibly Japanese, if I have a good dictionary.

Dates would be any time after Tuesday, at the moment - I'm fairly free.

Into: English, Spanish
Out of: French, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, could be bribed into doing Romanian since when I had to do it it wasn't THAT bad...

*I'm still not that comfortable with Spanish (though I think I can do it, unless you can find terrible mistakes in my Spanish translation from the last PGT). I think, while I might be prone to making mistakes in translating into Spanish, it might be quite difficult for me to mangle sentences in Spanish. So I don't really know which I can do better.

It should also be noted that I might change this list.

Time: Up to about the 15th of August, and from the 20th. Between those days, I'll be traveling so I won't be able to connect to the internet.

Hmm, I forgot to say - I'll be away between July 30 and August 10. So if possible, put me near the end.

Since it's so short, I'll be willing to do:

from: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, French, English, Spanish, German, Old French (of which I don't speak the last three, but could decipher pretty accurately with a dictionary, a grammar and some common sense)
to: Swedish, French, English, and if necessary I could try Norwegian or Danish, but it might come out a little bit strange

2 sentences doesn't seem as scary. Might I join in?

Both directions: Maltese, English, Italian, French

(Although my French isn't as good as it used to be, I'll put it down anyway)

I'll be away from 12th-19th of August

I really like the way 15 looks in Roman numerals here. XV is much better than 15, and much more... something good than XIII and XIV, which look quite ugly. Too bad the next one is XVI, which isn't so good either. And later on we have XX, which isn't so good. And after that it's just too many letters.

I'm expecting your The ABC of XIV: A Thorough Critique of the Esthetics in Roman Numerals to be out soon. Can I preorder it somewhere?

What?
AKA: You can help me pick which text to use: Text M, or Text P. It's secret, as no one but me will know what either text is until it's time to translate it, like normal.

So if you want Maltese, I'd try to get Simmalti to translate into Maltese and then send it to me just before he leaves, so I get it after I come back and can translate out of it. Just saying.

I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke
