Re: Quick Jap Question
Why is there an ethnic slur in the thread title?
"There was a particular car I soon came to think of as distinctly St. Louis-ish: a gigantic white S.U.V. with a W. bumper sticker on it for George W. Bush."

You're not welcome. Goodbye.Ulan wrote:not like I said slant or something

Re: Quick Jap Question
That's not an excuse though. You should just apologize for the misconception (at least I hope that's what it is) and edit the thread title. You're using similar logic to if you were in court for attacking someone with a knife, and your defense is "It's not like I killed him."Ulan wrote:not like I said slant or somethingEddy wrote:Why is there an ethnic slur in the thread title?
Re: Quick Jap Question
Jap? Is that considered rude or something? Damnit, the political correctness is increasing by the hour, it seems.

Re: Quick Jap Question
Lots of people here are not native speakers of English. Can't we just assume it was an unfortunate choice of words and move on? Everyone makes mistakes, like when George Dubbya Bush said Pakis thinking it was akin to Kiwi or Canuck? Or the famous "Which one of you bastards called this bastard a bastard?" exhibiting differing levels of profanity attached to one word, dependent on dialect (deeply offensive in Indian English, not so much in Australian English).Zhen Lin wrote:Do I need to point out it's been a slur since WWII or so?
Yes, it was silly, but move on.

Well he was aware of the problem after people pointed it out to him, and still didn't compensate for it in any way.Gulliver wrote: Can't we just assume it was an unfortunate choice of words and move on?

I am amazed at the lack of cognitive dissonance on your part.Gulliver wrote:Lots of people here are not native speakers of English. He doesn't know the correct usage of [sic], but I think his intent is clear - he wasn't sure of his transcription.Bob Johnson wrote:Don't [sic] something you don't understand.

I see your point, but I meant him as an example of someone in the category "everyone". Anyway... no good will come of this thread continuing.XinuX wrote:I am amazed at the lack of cognitive dissonance on your part.Gulliver wrote:Lots of people here are not native speakers of English. Re: Quick Jap Question
People who moan about 'political correctness' are moaning that they're not allowed to insult people as they please. It annoys me.
Re: Quick Jap Question
Thank you for that info.
In this country jap (or jappe/japse) is quite common slang for a japanese person and is generally not seen as something controversial. That's why I wondered "what now is there one is not allowed to say".
On a sidenote: A person who Americans might refer to as a Native American...is called Indian here.
EDIT: There are no "little people" here either. We say dvärg & dvärgväxt which translate dwarf & dwarfgrowth/dwarfgrown.

That should do for a start.
Here, too. It's not a slur; "Injun" is.The Count wrote:On a sidenote: A person who Americans might refer to as a Native American...is called Indian here.

Re: Quick Jap Question
I call them Indians too, even though there are somewhat occasional instances of confusion between "Indians of the subcontinent" and "Indians of North America, Canada, etc etc".The Count wrote:Thank you for that info.

Does that make me insensitive?

Don't quote him for anything. You are being hypocritical.Eddy wrote:Quoted for truth.finlay wrote:People who moan about 'political correctness' are moaning that they're not allowed to insult people as they please. It annoys me.
You bitch and moan about and insult the people of the South, while being very politically incorrect or just plain wrong about everything else. Then you have the gall to wrap yourself in the banner of "Liberalism".
Don't get me wrong, I'm probably being hypocritical too.

Hey eddy, you might want to look through the ethnic slurs list. your favourite word is on there.Eddy wrote:Quoted for truth.finlay wrote:People who moan about 'political correctness' are moaning that they're not allowed to insult people as they please. It annoys me.

New days - new expressions turning taboo. Expressions that were very much ok yesterday, but today someone all of a sudden decided that another/same someone is offended. I'm just waiting for the day when some scarf-wrapped batikgnome gets all upset just because one called the cleaning lady a cleaning lady (and not "hygienics technician" or "dust diagnostician").finlay wrote:People who moan about 'political correctness' are moaning that they're not allowed to insult people as they please. "Well it's not my fault you chose to be offended!" is not the best excuse there is. On the contrary, it smacks of white/male/straight/cis/Christian/able-bodied privilege (combine as applicable). The Count wrote:New days - new expressions turning taboo. Was mostly an abbreviation, I cant be bothered to edit the thread title and dont see too much reason to edit it.
And I dont see the use of continuing this thread, its purpose has already been served. But go on if you really must, its a bit hilarious to see such bickering over it
