On a similar note, how do you guys pronounce hopefully?

(I myself have /ˈhopfəli/ > [ˈhofːɰi(ː)] or, slightly stressed/carefully, [ˈhofːɯ̞ːɯ̞̯i(ː)] or, more stressed/carefully, [ˈhoʔp̚fɯ̞ːɯ̞̯i(ː)] or, very stressed/carefully, [ˈhoʔp̚fɯ̞ːʟ̞i(ː)]. Curiously enough, I do not seem to have any forms with /ll/ even in very careful speech, unlike fully itself.)

/ˈlɛʒər/, although I believe some Americans pronounce it /ˈliːʒər/.

This person from the US pronounces it [ˈli.ʒɚ], as possible evidence.

penalty: [ˈpʰɛ.nɤl.tiː]
Aristotle: [ɛ.ɹɪsˈtɔt.l̩]

I say /ˈlɛ.ʒɛr/, but today I heard someone say /lɪ.ˈʒjʊɚ/. I have no idea where he was from, but he spoke English. I didn't ask him because I was eavesdropping :P
That particular pronunciation struck me as weird

re: 'penalty' and 'Aristotle' -- one of my professors pronounces 'penalty' something like [pʰɛnɫ̩ɾɪi̯] or [pʰɛnɫ̩dɪi̯], and another pronounces 'Aristotle' with the stress on the first syllable, which sounded odd to me at first. (I'm used to hearing it on the third)

leisure: /ˈliʒər/ > [ˈɰiːʒʁ̩ˤ(ː)] or, markedly more stressed/carefully, [ˈʟ̞iːʒʁ̩ˤ(ː)]; interestingly enough my father has /ˈlɜʒər/ > [ˈɰɜːʒʁ̩ˤ(ː)] or, markedly more stressed/carefully, [ˈʟ̞ɜːʒʁ̩ˤ(ː)], but this is highly atypical therefor
Aristotle: /ˌerɪˈstatəl/ > [ˌɛ̝ːʁˤɨˈs̻t̻aɾ̥ɯ̞(ː)]~[ˌɛ̝ːʁˤɨˈs̻t̻aɾ̥ɤ(ː)] or, markedly less carefully and even then infrequently, [ˌɛ̝ːʁˤɨˈs̻t̻âːɤ̯]
penalty: /ˈpɜnəlti/ > [ˈpʰɜ̃̂ːːɤ̯ɾ̞i(ː)] or, slightly more stressed/carefully, [ˈpʰɜ̃ːnɯ̞ɾ̥i(ː)], or, markedly more stressed/carefully, /ˈpʰɜnəlˌti/ > [ˈpʰɜ̃ːnɯ̞ˌtʰi(ː)]

Very random question there:

Do you have any specific reasons for analyzing a distinct /ɚ/ phoneme, as opposed to analyzing an /ər/ phoneme sequence analogous to the /əl/ sequence you analyze for [ɫ̩]?

It's the only syllabic consonant that can appear in stressed position, and to analyze it as /ər/ would mean that final /rl/ clusters are allowed, but I can't think of any words with a vowel other than /ə/ + /rl/ other than the name 'Carl', which is commonly pronounced as two syllables anyway.

That is really just an accident of phonological history (due to there having been a number of vowels that were accepted in stressed syllables before /rl/ but most of them got merged), but some would analyze the vowel before /r/ in stressed syllables as not /ə/ but rather a /ɜ/.

That does not work for my own dialect, though, because I actually have a /ɜ/ phoneme distinct from that, and which, in limited conditions, can actually show up before /r/ without merging with /ər/.

I prefer at least for my own dialect to use a vowel-consonant pair analysis as /ər/ because it actually doesn't behave, for me, as a distinct vowel or syllabic consonant, but rather that the vowel takes the quality of the consonant, which is then elided unless followed by another vowel phoneme, where then it is preserved, even across word boundaries. /əl/ and /ʊl/ actually for me behave similarly, with the vowel taking on the quality of the /l/, which is then elided, except when followed by a vowel, even across word boundaries.

I would think Carl would be /a/ + /rl/. What about 'earl', 'curl', 'twirl', 'rural'? I have /ərəl/ [ɹ̩ʟ̩] for each of these.

I find it weird that /əl/ and /ʌl/ seem to be in complementary distribution for me... and I don't seem to distinguish /əl/ and /ul/:

/əl/? /ul/?: spool pool full tool cool bull rule yule fool bool duel (all of these sound fine pronounced either way)
/ʌl/: mull lull null dull

For Carl I have /arl/ > [ɑ(ː)ʁˤɰ].

For earl, curl, and twirl I have /ərl/ > [ʁ̩ˤ(ː)ɯ̞̯].

For rural I have /ərəl/ > [ʁ̩ˤːʁˤɯ̞(ː)]~[ʁ̩ˤːʁˤɤ(ː)].

For squirrel I have, in everyday speech, /ərl/ > [ʁ̩ˤ(ː)ɯ̞̯] and, in careful speech, /ərəl/ > [ʁ̩ˤːʁˤɯ̞(ː)]~[ʁ̩ˤːʁˤɤ(ː)].
