And we've again proved the first law of ZBBdynamics - any thread regardless of initial content may spontaneously degrade into an English pronounciation thread.

Probably either [gɜe̯ sɛks] or [geː sɛsk] depending whether I am using my native dialect or my adopted one.Torco wrote:how do you guys pronounce 'gay sex' in your dialect?

gE ?
really? you don't have a [j] or a or a at the end of gay? I've never heard anyone speaking English saying [gE] for gay. are you sure you're not (not noticing) the final palatalization/raising ?

Re: The Mystery of the Bonking Jackals
No one said they say it [gE], what are you talking about? Anyway, people from the northern midwest at least *do* often have undiphthongized /e/ and /o/ -- it's kind of a diagnostic feature (cf. Fargospeak; also Sarah Palin who has the same accent like some other Alaskans)

i've definitely heard [gE:] from somewhere up north.
[And I'm sure I've heard [ge:] as well, but I wouldn't immediately be able to tell]

Really? I always thought you were both gay and queer in the old-fashioned between-the-wars sense (merry and unusual, for those who are not aware of the ancient meanings of these words).Pthug wrote:i have/am [ge:]

For me, -ology is always /-ˈɒlədʒi/ and
Words with -philia and -phobia almost always have an "o" (or another vowel before it) so there is always a schwa immediately before the /f/ for me.
So I say /zʉː.ˈɔlədʒi/ and /zʉːəˈfiːliə/.
Without a schwa before the /f/, it feels to me like the first element is a common English word. (Compare ailurophobia, with a schwa, against cat phobia without the schwa.) My intuition is that /zʉːˈfiːliə/ (without the schwa) is a liking of zoos, although I suppose I would shift the stress to /ˈzʉːfiːliə/.
Also: [gæɪ sɛks]
And Jackal.PL.DEF.TOP, they have sex. Most animals do. Seeing that would just be an occasional sight in areas where jackals are common. Why not draw/paint it? A future society would probably look at our art and wonder what our funny obsession was with fruit, flowers and household objects sitting on tables. It's a genre called still-life. Maybe the ancients had a genre of art involving animals fucking.
