H.F. Nater - The Bella Coola Language. Anyone interested?

Post by Noriega »

I stumbled upon H.F. Nater's The Bella Coola Language from 1984. Is anyone interested in having it?

I could send it by mail and you pay the shipping, but maybe, in these modern times, I should scan it?
(I'll have to check if our office scanner has "feed scanning", because I'm not scanning 150 pages by hand.)

Indeed, I have always wanted to read a grammar of Bella Coola (or Nuxálk as I believe they prefer to call it now).

Nuxalkmc is definately an interesting language. Once you scan it, I'd definitely like to see that grammar thing.

Sending it to Xeph gets my vote. I mean, I'd like it too, but I'm far too lazy to scan it.

So it seems. Quote from the book:
"The name "Bella Coola" is itself a corruption of the Heiltsuk word bḷ́xʷlá somebody from Bella Coola."

This could not have come at a better time :O
What better way to expand a polysynthetic language than by reading up on other polysynthetic languages!

And I was getting worried that nobody even noticed/cared I'd uploaded it... I did it, like, over a week ago.

"Documenting"? Could you elaborate?

As in reviewing and categorizing all documentation and curriculum to date, then doing a few hundred hours more of recording, developing a scope and sequence for teaching the language, and overseeing the creation of new curriculum/training teachers.

New recordings, eh? How many informants do you have and how, erm, old are they? I was kinda under the impression that Nuxalk was pretty much extinct by now...
