Re: Your Native Language
My first language is English, and my ancestors probably spoke English, or maybe Welsh, Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, or German.
yeah I know...not very interesting.

Re: Your Native Language
My ancestors spoke German, English, and presumably Gaelic.
Re: Your Native Language
I've been thinking more about my ancestral background, which is very well documented down one side. I have nothing to do with my paternal relatives so I know almost nothing about them. Presumably they spoke a Judgemental dialect of the Unpleasant language.
On my mother's side, though. they probably did all speak English, with Norman French if you go really far back. My great grandmother was Irish, but I'd put money on her never having heard a word of Irish in her life as they were pretty Upper Class and therefore spoke English. My mother was born in Wales, but neither of her parents are Welsh and she doesn't know any. Looking down my family tree (which rather neatly joins up on both sides as my grandparents were cousins' cousins' cousins' cousins' cousins' cousins' aunts' nephews' cousins or something - I'm related to myself in at least two ways) there practically no non-English names, with a few Scottish ones in there for good measure.
A few of my ancestors definitely read Latin, spoke French and various Western European languages, but that's from work, travel and education, not heritage. Not very exciting, really.

Re: Your Native Language
My mother tongue is Swedish (and thus enables me to conversate with speakers of Norwegian and Danish, which I don't consider different languages, but just dialects of one big Scandinavian continuum), but thanks to growing up in Sweden, English has also been with me from early on. I don't speak it as well as I speak Swedish, but I feel just as secure in my English as in my Swedish.
With Icelandic, that I've taught to myself for about four years, I'm still lacking in many, many ways, but at least I've proven to speak it well enough to get around on Iceland for a week using only Icelandic, and I sometimes have voice chats with an Icelandic friend of mine, in Icelandic, and that works out nicely too. I'd never be able to translate a book into Icelandic, though.

L1: German
I've some Dutch and Polish ancestors in my family tree, but all my older relatives in living memory were L1 German speakers. In my childhood I had some exposure to English, Dutch, and East Frisian Platt.

Re: Your Native Language
You do realize it's possible to have more than one topic in a thread at once?

Re: Your Native Language
Weirdly, on this site, the longer a thread continues the greater likelihood that the topic will turn to gay sex. Or gay stuff in general. It's a very queer board. I am, of course, disgusted. I mean, I have no problem with fags, I just don't like having my face rubbed in it. Normal people don't want to see that kind of faggy shit all over the place.Asahi wrote:Well yes but honestly, Native Language > Gay sex??? The formula is (n => Gay Sex; n = anything) = acceptable ZBB behaviour.

Welcome to reality: you have no control over threads you start. You would do well to remember that.Asahi wrote:Well yes but honestly, Native Language > Gay sex??? Derailing is no fun :Astraios wrote:You do realize it's possible to have more than one topic in a thread at once?

L1, etc. is Slovene. I'm supposed to have some Czech blood in me but it certainly doesn't show.

Are you saying that the Czechs look noticeably different from the Slovenes?Cathbad wrote:L1, etc. is Slovene. I'm supposed to have some Czech blood in me but it certainly doesn't show.
