The flapping is variable in brE, anyway... it does exist but it's not the primary variant or something. I think you're just going to have to take people at their word when they say [d]...
How do you pronounce "Wikipedia"?

"Not me", then.

Oh, I forgot about non-NAE-speakers there, actually. But yeah, I have my doubts about [di(ː)] showing up there in the speech of NAE-speakers there...finlay wrote:The flapping is variable in brE, anyway... it does exist but it's not the primary variant or something. I don't have any variant of [ɾ] or [j] for the <di>, and I'm a speaker of North American English... actually, I don't have any flapping of <t> or <d> in general.Travis B. wrote:Oh, I forgot about non-NAE-speakers there, actually. Just as a random question, where are you from?Theta wrote:Wikipedia: [wɪxɨˈpʰiːɾiə]

The reason I ask is that at least in two North American English varieties we have seen here, those spoken by TaylorS and myself, we indeed have lenition of at least /p/ and /k/ (and for at least me, also /tʃ/) in this position, even though the exact details of the lenition do vary. Hence it would be interesting to see just where you are, to help see what the range of this lenition is.

I live right around the Atlanta metro area of Georgia but I'm not really sure if this kind of thing happens normally around here.Travis B. wrote:Just as a random question, where are you from?Theta wrote:Wikipedia: [wɪxɨˈpʰiːɾiə]

Re: How do you pronounce "Wikipedia"?
Okay, that's pretty far away from where Taylor and I am from, as I am from (southeastern) Wisconsin and he's from Minnesota. However, that one would see lenition in this position in any sort of North American English variety is not too surprising, all things considered.Theta wrote:I live right around the Atlanta metro area of Georgia but I'm not really sure if this kind of thing happens normally around here.Travis B. wrote:Just as a random question, where are you from?Theta wrote:Wikipedia: [wɪxɨˈpʰiːɾiə]

I universally flap d's and t's after vowels.

Including in codas and at unstressed-to-stressed syllable boundaries, as opposed to the typical North American English case of primarily stressed-to-unstressed syllable boundaries, the cluster /nt/ aligned with those boundaries (which becomes a nasal flap), and the like?Zumir wrote:I universally flap d's and t's after vowels.

Re: How do you pronounce "Wikipedia"?
Not that I really count, being non-native and all, but I think my English accent is probably a mishmash of most North American dialects present in Hollywood (with a slight unplaceable foreign accent added in), and I definitely flap that d.Travis B. wrote:Oh, I forgot about non-NAE-speakers there, actually. I don't have any particular accent, but I would say it most resembles the American.
