Re: Words you hate because of their sounds
I'm going to chime in on the rural hate, assuming it isn't pronounced with /u/, which is usually accompanied by a higher pitch on the first syllable, or at least that's my impression. The terser, comprised-entirely-of-syllabic-consonants /rr̩l̩/, however, is somewhat unpleasant, since it basically consists of growling and then making a sound somewhat reminiscent of a damp pile, or perhaps puddle, of mud, the so called dark /l/.

"Oesophageal" because it sounds like "ass o vaj-eal".
"Lilacs" when the second syllable rhymes with "wax" just feels unbalanced.

Gnarly. But that's another ugly word.Darkgamma wrote:Gnadenlos is both hässlich and wunderbar.
English lacks a word as awesome as "gnadenlos" or any gnV- initial for that matter

Dark L in "rural?" Maybe in lower Alabama they treat the English language with such disdain, but surely in no civilized part of the the country/world.Jetboy wrote:I'm going to chime in on the rural hate, assuming it isn't pronounced with /u/, which is usually accompanied by a higher pitch on the first syllable, or at least that's my impression. But dark L is a good thing to mention if it hasn't been already. Needs to die in a fire.

I grew up in Northern Hesse. Mum's grown up at the Swiss border (but her family's from the Ruhr Area), dad grew up where I did. Might be an independent innovation, though, since I find [b̪] much easier to say than proper [v].Darkgamma wrote:Well it's wierd, I know. Nobody from up north made such a sound. Where you from?

Linguistically exotic? Whereto?
Linguistically exotic as in Serbia, the land of 7 cases, preverbs, extreme pro-drop, clitic verbs, agreement in every single word unless random rules go against it ("The hell do you mean I have to agree this entire phrase with the nominalised number but leave an even more vital phrase in the instrumental case!?"), obscure untranslatable words (дочек рашчерупаног неодевеног обувеног обућара људи испуњених инатом - Nom. Gen. Gen. Gen. Gen. Gen. Gen. Inst., almost every word lacks an English equivalent), even more obscure ablauts and alternations that died out 800+ years ago in other Slavic languages; but no, Serbian just has to have them!
Eh... it's frustrating...
