The approximate (virtual) preform of the Sanskrit verb would be *dm̩h₂-ye-, with a zero-grade root. Now, syllabic nasals are vocalised in Indo-Iranian, leading to *daH-ya-. With loss of the laryngeal with compensatory lengthening, we get *dā-ya-. On the basis of full-grade dam-, the final nasal was restored as dāmya-
