LOL. xD
Re: Nice sounding natlangs
That's exactly the sort of Spanish I prefer. But I'm sure you have personal reasons for that, like how one of my least favourite accents of English is RP.Izambri wrote: I'm not fond of

+1. Castilian with distinción is my favorite Spanish variety, but Catalan still is the nicest sounding Romance language down there.jmcd wrote:That's exactly the sort of Spanish I prefer.Izambri wrote: I'm not fond of

Technically yes, but some people do pronounce it as a trill.Mr. Z wrote:But isn't that a fricative?
Re: Nice sounding natlangs
Sure it's personal, since our language preferences is a subjective thing! My problem (let's say it this way) with Castilian is [x] and [θ]; I don't like these sounds. Not that I think they're horrible (in fact, I use both in some of my conlangs), but Castilian sounds arid and cold, craggy and brownish-grey in my ears, like some Machado's poem in Campos de Castilla, which isn't a bad thing (in fact, saying this, I'm praising the language). My problem is when you add [x] and [θ] to the equation... Hmmm, no, it doesn't work at all. The problem is that Castilian needs something more, I feel, like some vowels ([ɛ] and [ɔ], maybe), for example, or a few more palatals (not too many) and affricates. Then, with that, the sometimes overwhelming presence of [x] - [θ] can be soften.jmcd wrote:That's exactly the sort of Spanish I prefer. That's why I prefer Greek than Castilian, although both sound very similar. Greek wins because has some affricates and palatals that Castilian lacks.

Re: Nice sounding natlangs
Salvadoran Spanish is your solution, with plenty of [ɛ] and [ɔ], use of [h~h\] and [s] for /x, θ/, and I believe I pronounce /ɲ tʃ ʝ/ in the same POA (perhaps palatal).Izambri wrote:Hmmm, no, it doesn't work at all. The above chart doesn't distinguish varieties, hence English comes out as 2nd worst (if you consider plus votes, 2nd worst in a tie with Russian).

But this topic is about how they sound like.Mr. Z wrote:But Semitic languages are awesome!
Seriously, how can you not like them? The triconsonantal roots, the emphatic consonants, the complex synthetic structures, their beautiful scripts... They're practically perfect.

Re: Nice sounding natlangs
Well, they sound awesome too. It all depends on who you ask~ Asking average Americans on the street wouldn't yield the same results than asking the linguists at the Semitic Linguistics Symposium of January '99.

Not enough love for Catalan? C'mon, guys.
Re: Nice sounding natlangs
What? Along with Portuguese, Icelandic and Arabic it has 3 likes and 0 dislikes. Only Finnish beats them in pure score – French, English, German and Mandarin have more likes but also lots of dislikes... 3/0 is the top score for a language with 0 dislikes.dhokarena56 wrote:Not enough love for Catalan? Seeing as how everyone's pretty much summed up their favorite and not-so-favorite languages, I'll just post my top three favorite dialects and top three not-so-favorite ones. Meh. Off topic?
Yay
European French (French from France > Belgian French > Swiss French)
British English (RP > everything else, although I must admit I hate the Bristol accent)
Mexican Spanish (\m/)
Nay
Canadian French
African French
Dominican/Cuban/Puerto Rican Spanish
I don't think I'd like French as much if Spanish wasn't my native language. There's something about its phonology that goes well with its latinate vocabulary, though any francophobes out there can disagree all you want :p

Cuzeian Count of Votes
Iainos conceived languages for humans of his creation and Eiledan constructed them.
Ecaias didn't have his own language,so he disturbed the languages;hence the dislike to French,English and Russian.
Amnas told to Iainos what has Ecaias done.
Iainos didn't want to redo the languages.
On Iainos' command,Einalandlaue moved their stars far from the Earth(and Almea),and hence the night is dark.
Then Iainos punished Amnas for disloyalty to Ecaias.
As Eiledan created Giants,Amnas created his helper,Soxaeco. He was more evil than Amnas and Ecaias together.
Soxaeco created Ogres.
Ogres liked one language, but Giants didn't.They voted, but they couldn't agree so they warred.
The iliu were created and they flourished.
Amnas created the ktuvoks.
Thre was 8 iiu-ktuvok wars .
In the 4th war Soxaeco went to use Obondosiu's star to free Ecaias.
Iliu could not prevent Soxaeco to do that.
But the star destroyed Soxaeco.
Eiledan used the star's fire to separate positive from negative votes.
