I've been trying to find a book on Hmong for some time now, and all I'm getting is the Hmong immigrant experience, which, while I'm sure it's fascinating, is not a grammar. Does anybody know where I might find one?

I'm North Carolinian - I can't find Hmong language books either.

My entire university's library only turns up a phrasebook and a book that has something to do with their writing system, even though there is a rather sizeable number of Hmong here (including one of my best friends, ironically enough). I think that your search will be quite difficult, to say the least.

There seems to be only one author who has published grammars of the two main Hmong languages: Thomas Lyman. I have no way to know if they are any good, but both books are available in my favourite university library (UBC, Vancouver), according to its online catalogue:

Grammar of Mong Njua (Green Miao) : a descriptive linguistic study / by Thomas Amis Lyman. Lyman, Thomas Amis. 1979.

Dictionary of Mong Njua : a Miao (Meo) language of Southeast Asia / by Thomas Amis Lyman. Lyman, Thomas Amis. 1974.

There may well be copies in a library closer to you. You can also try interlibrary loan.

The World's Writing Systems by Bright and Daniels.

this is the only book I know that has Hmong writing in it, that isn't written in Hmong.

I want it regardless. But I would want one written in Hmong ( the actual script not this shitty Latin crap they use ) even more.

I always do a double-take when my Hmong friend tries to teach me things and I ask how they are spelled (not to mention that I always end up saying the word for "wall" instead of her name because I cannot hear tones) — the Latin orthography is absolutely hideous.

100% agreed. Romanized Zhuang has the same problem too. Its a great and fascinating language, but the orthography makes it look like something a third grader has green aliens from the moon say in the comic book he made.

I heard a Hmong song once very pretty.

Also Brenda Song ( from Disney channel ) is Hmong. I had no clue I thought she was Filipino. XD Although I have never heard it spoken. I would like to though.

And the link is broken I think because when I click on it it's asking me to go to the "main screen" or I guess the homepage and that my session has expired.

Damn I really would've like to have seen it.
