This is the subject of natural language processing. There is no right answer, there are just better answers. If you go onto the ACM Portal website and search for language identification you'll find plenty of papers on different methods.

Ah, interesting! Thank you for directing me there. Some of them are also about spoken language identification, another interesting problem.
