Help your fluency in a nifty way
Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
I tried speaking French today, but it's been a long time since grade 12. I kept wanting to use Spanish words instead of French ones. It's funny how in eight months I've learned all this Spanish, but I can barely remember French after five years of it in high school. I guess that just speaks to the inefficacy of high school language instruction.

There are some in this post, too:I'll admit I'm not 100% sure about the "vielmal 'und' und 'oder'" part, but that sounds about right to me. I decided to go with this correction. Also, I think it might be possible (maybe even better?) to say wieder auf Niederländisch, i.e. back to Dutch, but I'd like hwhatting to weigh in so we can be sure. EDIT2: Never mind, I'm pretty sure I was wrong. EDIT3: Oops, crossed out too much. I appear to have been wrong about the "vielmal" thing. My brain just made that up. But I still would like to suggest using wieder here.

Yes, I lost my train a thought a bit when I was writing that text. I wanted to indicate that I almost spoke completely in German, not that I almost spoke in German then suddenly stopped myself.
I imagine that "omschakellen" was also in my dictionary but I just didn't see it. I have to better think about what words I use, especially when there's a word that is linked to a given word in English i.e. a anglicism like "switchen."

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Save various election things I am actually quite happy today. My French is coming along well, my Dutch (well it's coming along anyway). My research is coming along and I have already spoken with a few people in the community I study. And now I have a place to stay in Sweden, in Stockholm, for Eurovision, with a family member of a ZBBer, which is very kind because Stockholm is really expensive. We're also returning to the US the first of June, which is also good because we have almost spent the entire year in Belgium and I am ready to see my family and everything I miss back home (plus my husband and I need to find a job since we're now almost broke)

'lly is a weird contraction initially. On'dydy means 'isn't it' - it's not used when there's an actual question. Iawn is more like saying 'OK'. I don't know if this is the normal idiom for 'how time flies', but I would usually use a calque like uhh tydi('r) amser yn fflio!

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Vijay wrote:Israeli citizens are required to do military service.
Mmm, it’s a bit more complicated than “citizens are required”. In practice a little more than half of conscripts actually serve. And I’ll have to serve for only six months if I’m fit for service at all, so I won’t be a combat soldier, for example, whatever they say about my fitness. After a few weeks at boot camp, they’ll probably want me to work in an office with written translation etc., that is, what I’m good at anyway.

Is that "What's Orphan Black?" or "What's creepy?"
if the first, it's a v good tv show!
if the second, the last episode's atmosphere. The first series was really good, but the third was kinda bad. Now it's the fourth and it looks like it has gotten better.
I’ve never heard of this series. I’ll watch it. Thanks for the idea. Now it’s Passover and I’m so drunk I’m not sure if I’m happy or feeling bad. This kind of drunk is the best kind of drunk.

2"stof" is limited to study material. I substituted "geneuzel", which is non-neutral as opposed to the English "things", but since you opposed it to happy things I think it fits.
3"eigenlijk" doesn't combine well with "helemaal". I'd substitute "best" ("eigenlijk best tevreden"). I think that's the same in English, "actually completely happy" sounds off to me. But then again, inans.
4That's more of a stylistic choice, I think the English can need an "as well" as well :)
5I'm not sure what you want to say here, the English seems a bit broken as well. "Gemeenschap" can't be used for "community" in this sense, but I can't link "community" to "I study"...
6Or "gesproken", depending on what you mean.
7For me, "onderdak hebben" means that you are staying somewhere right now, so "ik heb onderdak in Zweden" sounds to me like you're already in Sweden. Your mileage may vary though.
8"Eurovision" is not a common abbreviation in Dutch (though Wikipedia says it's in English). "Songfestival" will do if you don't want to go full "Eurovisie Songfestival".
9Apostrophs after letterwords.
10"die" can only refer to a person or a "de" word. In this case, you referred to either the ZBBer or the family member. Use "wat" to refer to actions and events.
11"Terugkeren" is definite. If you mean you're going back for a holiday, use "teruggaan".
12Or just "VS".
13You can change the word order here, "We keren 1 juni terug naar ...", "We keren terug naar de VS op 1 juni".
14Not very idiomatic. "goed" is used for more objective things. "Wat ik ook leuk vind" or the like would be better.
15Very Flemmish. ND "het hele jaar"
16"Gezin" refers to partner + kids. You'd say that if your husband was home with your kids and you got back to them. In this case, it's "familie" (parents, cousins etc.).
17Without "aan" it means you miss things when at home (instead of about home). It's for me slightly more idiomatic after "mis", but "dat ik aan thuis mis" is not entirely wrong.
18"werk" is a mass noun.
19or "omdat we", "aangezien we", "daar we"
Du gehst doch nach Eurovision? Das ist so toll!
You're going to Eurovision after all? That's so great!

I recently started going out with a really cute girl. Even though my romantic experience up to now has been rather lacking, I really appreciate how natural and joyful the time we spend together always is. Of course we can't predict the future, we can only continue living with as much happiness as possible, letting the road of life take us where it will.
