Room Ticket
Room Ticket
This thread will use descriptive labels on diagrams from two different types of American houses and ask you what you call each room. Please don't read my results until you have written yours. Feel free to do this in your native language if you wish. Please post your location.
Diagram A is a McMansion or a typical American upper-middle to lower-upper class house which dot little suburbs with streets named after trees on the outskirts of large cities. This house has a lot of rooms and you will be asked to label them all as well as you can. Diagram B is a typical ranch or rambler built in the 1950s or 1960s which are plentiful in America. This ranch has a 70s addition of another room on the back. In colonial two-story and tri-level and quad-level homes built during the 70s the addition room was a common room built in the house in addition to the other room with TVs and couches. I had to make this myself so apologies for the quality. Please answer before reading this:
Saginaw, Michigan, USA
For me:
A1: Bedroom
A2: Laundry room, occasionally a utility room
A3: Kitchen
A4: Great room in this type of house, living room in smaller homes
A5: Dining room
A6: Den
A7: Foyer
A8: Master bedroom
A9: Master bathroom or bath
A10: Walk-in-closet abbreviated WIC though never pronounced as such
A11: Bathroom or bath
A12: Garage
B1: Bedroom
B2: Bathroom or bath
B3: Hallway or hall
B4: Attached dining room or dining area
B5: Kitchen
B6: Living room
B7: Closet
B8: Basement
B9: Garage

I've just thought as well, If rooms A6 and B10 are used by kids for playing in, then they're playrooms.

I have always associated the den with playing, probably because I havent lived in a house with a "den" since I was 9 years old. The houses we live in now are large, but tend to have the extra rooms be bedrooms. e.g. Im in a house with 4 bedrooms now of which 2 are mine ... one actually has the bed in it, and not much else because it's small, and the other has my computer and most of my clothes.

The former I'd call a landing. We had one of the latter when I was growing up, and simply called it a dirt-room.Viktor77 wrote:I want the room the stairs lead to. I want your term for an unfinished area under a house.

I should note that the two bathrooms on the right of the plan would not be called bathrooms, they would be called ensuites since they're connected to bedrooms. The lower one would also be known as a toilet, the upper one, again, could be a shower room or toilet but not usually a bathroom.

B8: Basement/Cellar (a basement is somewhere you could potentially live in, like with high ceilings, which we don't tend to have here – a cellar is purely for storage)
B9: Garage
B10: Looks a bit like a conservatory since it's off at the back of the house. Or a second living room.

A1: Bedroom. Really should get that hole in the north wall fixed, though.
A2: Laundry room.
A3: Kitchen.
A4: Living room / main room / inside.
A5: Near the table in the living room.
A6: Storage room for redundant furniture.
A7: Front doorway; area behind the door in the living room.
A8: Back porch. Why do you sleep on the porch? All those windows and the back door...
A9: [this] Bathroom. Why does this bathroom have two sinks? Why are there two bathrooms on this side of the building? Is this a hotel?
A10: Closet for redundant clothing.
A11: [that] Bathroom.
A12: [ɡəˈɻɑdʒ] ~ [ɡəˈɻɑʒ]
Room immediately south of A1: Bathroom.
Room immediately south of that: Should be another bedroom.
Room immediately south of that: Redundant Bathroom Number Two.
B1: Bedroom.
B2: Bathroom. Oh, I guess this one isn't a hotel.
B3: Hall.
B4: Near the table.
B5: Kitchen area.
B6: Near the TV.
B4-B6 area is "inside."

B10: Out there.
I'm not really one for unnecessary labelling -- had to think of all these in terms of explaining to somebody where to put something, so imagine I'm pointing.
And no, I haven't had the 'pleasure' of living with fifteen siblings who all need to use a bathroom.
Edit: It occurs to me that Viktor must do a lot of sitting on couches and watching TV with many other people with whom he doesn't want to compete for a bathroom.

Re: Room Ticket
A1 Bedroom
A2 Laundry
A3 Kitchen
A4 Lounge, Living Room (depending on how much it gets used by who)
A5 Dinning Room (though given that it appears not to be seperate, A4 is likely to be included in this label in this design of house)
A6 excessive
ok, actually, this would also just be called a Lounge or Living Room, depending on what was not already taken by A4. also, if only one of these rooms had a TV in it, then it might well be called the 'TV Room', unless it was already the 'Dining room'.
A7 Foyer or Entryway. or just 'by the front door'.
A8 Master Bedroom
A9 Ensuit Bathroom, often refered to as just an 'Ensuit' (i'm so spelling that wrong). note that if it doesn't have an actual Bath in it, it's not a Bathroom.
A10 again, excessive
heh. a 'walk in wardrobe' i believe.
A11 assuming it contains a bath, it's a bathroom. otherwise i'm not entirely sure, as the toilet is usually in a seperate room here (though not always) and a shower sometimes is as well (though that's rarer). the shower might be enough to qualify it as a bathroom, maybe.
A12 garage. technically an attached garage, though no one would bother to mention that except in the specs for selling it. given the size i'd say probably a double garage (though, again, only mentioned where relevant. it's still 'the garage')
B1 Bedroom
B2 again, Probably a bathroom.
B3 personally i'd call it a passage, but hallway, hall, or corridor are equally likely terms. (though the latter two have far more common meanings of 'a large building consisting mostly of a single large room for gatherings' (think townhall, i guess) in the case of the former, and 'hall ways in large institutions where lots of people will pass through on a regular basis'... sort of psychologically external to the space one functions in rather than internal.... or something.)
B4 actually, in this sort of open plan arangement, it's probably considered part of the kitchen if it has the same flooring as B5. unless B5 and B6 have different floor coverings and it has the same one as B6... given the shape of passage and stairs, though... yeah, it's part of the kitchen.
B5 Kitchen.
B6 Lounge or Living room. probably more likely to be the former seeing as it's not entirely seperate from the kitchen, but that doesn't mean much.
B7 wardrobe (and it's not really a room
)
B8 Basement. almost no house has those here due to being right on a plate boundary. they're not really safe. so the term doesn't see much use in normal conversation.
B9 Garage.
B10 if it's just another room it's a living room again. special traits would get it other names.

Re: Room Ticket
Oh, please post your location, sorry.
I'm surprised that out of the Americans here, only two have so far used family room to describe B10, interesting. Maybe family room is a kind of midwestern regional thing.

Re: Room Ticket
I'm from NW Minnesota
Some more terminology off the top of my head:
Room with books, a desk, a comfy chair, and perhaps a computer.
study
A small room attached to the kitchen for small, informal meals.
breakfast nook
A room set off for video games, board games, pool, foosball, etc.
rec room
An outdoor space paved with concrete, brick, or stone.
patio

Re: Room Ticket
In my experience "family room" is a recent affectation invented to appeal to "good family values" -oriented Baby Boomer parents.Viktor77 wrote:Oh, please post your location, sorry.

Re: Room Ticket
I grew up in a house where the basement was a separate building, probably just due to stones in the ground or something (I remember my dad saying "the granite level here is 1 point under the limit (at which radiation would be unsafe)". We called that the cellar. Also, the washer and drier were there. Then every other house we moved into it was attached to the rest of the house and we called it alternately "downstairs" and "the basement". I dont think there's any real reason for this, my parents probably just got into the habit of using a different word.
The "back room" I listed up above is due to the fact that the room is in the back of the house. If it were in the front I'd probably say front porch even if it was enclosed, or "Florida room" if it had lots of windows or even had just mosquito nets instead of windows.

I lived in a house pretty much exactly like example B, including having had a back room added on to it after the rest was built. However it wasnt insulated so it was pretty near useless during the winter, and may have even made the rest of the house colder by the process of heat transfusion.
We lived in Massachusetts then and now we live in the southern tip of Maine.

A1: (guest) bedroom
A2: laundry room (a "mudroom" would be similar, but likely with a utility sink and maybe a concrete floor, plus a door to the outside)
A3: kitchen
A4: living room ("great room" is a term only used by realtors)
A5: dining room or dining area (could be "formal dining room" if it were walled off)
A6: den
A7: foyer
A8: (master) bedroom
A9: (master) bathroom (major distinction here is whether it comes off the main bedroom or the hall)
A10: (walk-in) closet
A11: bathroom (the others might be "guest bathrooms" - also, this should be a half bath, not a full bath as drawn as nobody will shower there)
A12: garage
And I strongly disagree with your upper to lower middle class thing - lower middle class folks (if such a thing exists in the U.S. anymore) can't afford a house like that in any market I've lived in.

B2: bathroom
B3: hallway
B4: dining area/eat-in kitchen (depending on layout)
B5: kitchen
B6: den or living room
B7: closet
B8: basement stairs
B9: garage
B10: den or sunroom (depending on windows)
And basement stairs lead to a basement ("unfinished basement" in this case).

Re: Room Ticket
That's what we call a stupid typo. It should be upper-middle to lower-upper class.spats wrote:And I strongly disagree with your upper to lower middle class thing - lower middle class folks (if such a thing exists in the U.S. anymore) can't afford a house like that in any market I've lived in.
Re: Room Ticket
Im lower middle class and living in a house like that right now. Come to rural New England where housing is cheap because people dont wanna live in the countryside and deal with the six months of snow.
Also there are places with housing much cheaper than here. My aunt and uncle in Minnesota got a property about 40 acres big with a large spacious house with a barn for $11,900. (But no indoor plumbing! They had to build that.)

How Anglocentric
Standard-ish German, I guess:
A1: Schlafzimmer (if it’s for children, Kinderzimmer, if it’s a guest room, Gästezimmer)
A2: Waschküche
A3: Küche
A4: Wohnzimmer
A5: Esszimmer
A6: …zweites Wohnzimmer? Fernsehzimmer?
A7: Eingang
A8: Schlafzimmer (maybe Elternschlafzimmer to differentiate from A1)
A9: Bad
A10:(begehbare) Garderobe begehbarer Kleiderschrank (what weird interference was that)
A11: Bad
A12: Garage
B1: Schlafzimmer
B2: Bad
B3: Flur/Diele
B4: Esszimmer, Essbereich if not a discrete unit from B5
B5: Küche
alternatively: B4+B5 = Essküche
B6: Wohnzimmer
B7: (Einbau-)Kleiderschrank
B8: häää?
B9: Garage
B10: zweites Wohnzimmer

Re: Room Ticket
You could get a 5500 square foot 3-story Victorian with a giant tower on two city lots plus a sizable garage for $25,000 here in downtown Saginaw. You would just have to put the work into restoring it.Soap wrote:Im lower middle class and living in a house like that right now. Re: Room Ticket
But the OP specifically said that it was the type of house being built right now - and you can tell by the floorplan. Large houses in rural areas aren't anything new; they're typically much older and have an older-style floorplan.Soap wrote:Im lower middle class and living in a house like that right now.
