I pronounce them [hɚɹi] and [fɚɹi] respectively.

That's the first time I've seen -ae as a schwa and spontaneous ghost -s's.

Aw, I thought it would be [vi:ni: kheI.vi:] or something.

strange things happen when rough phonetic borrowings from dead languages that aren't ever used in common speech are involved

Dialect? This is Latin, isn't it? Are you a native speaker of Latin?

Yay, someone else who rounds the NURSE vowel.

They're roughly [ˈhɞɹɪ] and [ˈfœːɹɪ] for me, though the end vowel varies a lot.

Yes, [ˈviːni ˈkʰeɪvi]. (Word final unstressed [i‏] is pronounced short, even in SSBE, which is why there's even a separate set for it, the HAPPY set.)

Well, yeah, kinda. In the same way you're a native speaker of PIE (but 21st century PIE). In the dialect of Paris it'd be [venekaˈve] too.

Interesting - same for algae then I guess? What is SSBE (I guess it's not SSBE :: Swiss Society for Biomedical Engineering, or is it?).

Whenever I read descriptions of English phonology NURSE is always described as basically [ɵ] or [ɵ˞] (a rounded vowel higher than the schwa), where "ɜ/ɜ˞" is basically legacy code in English phonetics from early 20th century linguistics (Ladefoged and Maddieson even have no problem drawing a diagram with <ɜ> higher than <ə>, admitting convention often goes over whatever the IPAssociation would like)

[æɫdʒi].

SSBE stands for "Standard Southern British English", basically today's growing standard pronunciation in England in comparison to the RP that Jones described in the early 20th century. RP /ʊə/ is now merged with /ɔː/ (<poor> [pʰɔː]), RP /æ/ [æ] is lowered to a mostly-front [a], RP /ʌ/ [ʌ] is centralized to [ɐ], and other things.

yes, I can hear a difference between a Spanish person saying "like" properly and one saying laic.
Nevertheless, no, that's not what I was saying, it's the way he transcribed it what made it obvious it was not a Latin/romance/non-English native!

We're talking about a language when it was spoken about 2050 years ago. How do you know they pronounced it [ai] and not [aɪ]? In fact there are some who prefer [aɛ̯].

But if I'm wrong, how does the following exchange make sense?

Ean wrote:You can't hide your English accent - [aI] for [aj] and also [e:].
The correction of [e] > [e:] makes sense only if we're talking about imitating 1st century BC Latin, but then [aI] > [aj] can hardly be argued for...

The conlanger formerly known as “the conlanger formerly known as Pole, the”.

If we don't study the mistakes of the future we're doomed to repeat them for the first time.
