That's not an excuse though. You should just apologize for the misconception (at least I hope that's what it is) and edit the thread title. You're using similar logic to if you were in court for attacking someone with a knife, and your defense is "It's not like I killed him."

Lots of people here are not native speakers of English. Can't we just assume it was an unfortunate choice of words and move on? Everyone makes mistakes, like when George Dubbya Bush said Pakis thinking it was akin to Kiwi or Canuck? Or the famous "Which one of you bastards called this bastard a bastard?" exhibiting differing levels of profanity attached to one word, dependent on dialect (deeply offensive in Indian English, not so much in Australian English).

In this country jap (or jappe/japse) is quite common slang for a japanese person and is generally not seen as something controversial. That's why I wondered "what now is there one is not allowed to say".

On a sidenote: A person who Americans might refer to as a Native American...is called Indian here.

EDIT: There are no "little people" here either. We say dvärg & dvärgväxt which translate dwarf & dwarfgrowth/dwarfgrown.

I call them Indians too, even though there are somewhat occasional instances of confusion between "Indians of the subcontinent" and "Indians of North America, Canada, etc etc".

Does that make me insensitive?

New days - new expressions turning taboo. Expressions that were very much ok yesterday, but today someone all of a sudden decided that another/same someone is offended.
