Also it's statans. Rhymes with satans.

I realise we've been on a US state high recently. Just flow with it. I'm sure someday Germany's turn will come and we'll have people asking, what do people from Schleswig-Holstein call themselves?

Hm, I think I'm heard "Connecticutian" [k@nE4I"kju.S1n] more than "Connecticuter", but both still sound awkward. I prefer "Nutmegger" :D

So in the news they say, 'All across the state, Nutmeggers are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. Now let's go to Steve Winooski in Stonington with the latest on how Nutmeggers are weathering the storm"?

Why don't you just do what the rest of the world does and say "from [state]"?

It may very well be that case, but IME local newscasters love using cute little state demonyms. It personalises things I think.

Personally, I'm fond of "Tight-Assed River" for the Illinois (as featured in the title of a chapter in a Malcolm Gladwell book). Oh, and people do actually say "Illinoisans".

I see your states and raise you British denonyms.

Liverpool - Liverpudlian or Scouse (slightly broader, inclused nearby areas).
Newcastle - Geordie.
Manchester - Mancunian.
London - Londoner.
Bristol/Bristle/Brizzle - Bristolian.
Brighton - Brightonian.
Kent - Kentish.
Lewes - Lewesian (rhymes with Indonesian).
Glasgow - Glaswegian.
Birmingham - Brummie.

Other way round. The country was originally a county called Norgow and just north of the rest of Scotland but Glasgow was so mean to it that it changed its name and moved, becoming a country in the process (easier to do, less paperwork).

When, in local news? None of them is used much because it's the local news, it's assumed that the people affected are from CT. :P Kidding of course, I have heard "Nutmeggers" on local news, but everyone in CT already understands that while people from out of state wouldn't necessarily. I don't think I've *EVER* heard "Connecticuters" or "Connecticutians" or any other variety of "Connecticut"+[demonym suffix] on the news ever. I think it's mostly like Astraios said, "people from/in/of/across Connecticut"

I love it when a demonym has an obscure relationship to the corresponding toponym, particularly when some idiosyncratic Latinisation is involved, as with Cantabrigian or Regiomontano. It saddens me not to have more of these in the states. Imagine what a hard-on it would give Viktor to be a Districtensian!

Hey, I'm a Michigander! Not a Michiganian, Michiganer, but a Michigander! The first settlers here took a gander at the landscape and decided they must be Michiganders. After all, our state motto is Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice!

Who needs demonyms? We get by fine without one in Edinburgh.

The ones I find funny are Gibraltarians – so few people have heard of or been to their city that the demonym they actually use sounds a bit fake to our ears (it's something to do with the stress shift from /dʒɪˈbrɒltə(r)/ to /ˌdʒɪbrɒlˈteriən/, imo). A lot of people invent things like "Gibraltese", which is much catchier (and rhymes well with "Maltese") but seems to annoy them for some reason.
